I've got everything prepared for a return home, I've got premises, I'm on the voters register and registered as an English tax resident with an English bank account etc etc. If I left now with my small travel case pre-packed, I would be in my new British home by this evening.
I only have one problem, I would be alone in the UK. My wife intends to stay in Spain, a country in which she has spent most of her life.
And I don't want to live alone after all those years.

Would 6 months here 6 months there be an option?

Loneliness can be a very difficult feeling to negate!
Would you settle for a happy compromise and consider moving to a "more lively" area of Spain. More Expats and at the same time keeping the Mrs happy?

Stu, HBG already lives in Torevieja. You can't get much livelier or more ex-pats than that.

Spain is fantastic if you have a good income and speak the lingo.
The problems arise when you need to earn money or age creeps up on you and you can't cope with bureaucracy and the language.
A lot of help that's taken for granted in the UK is simply not available in Spain.
My advice (to myself) and others nearing retirement who dream of a 'life in the sun' is;
Don't sell your UK property. Rent it out.
Plan to stay for a period of time.
Use the rent you receive to pay someone else's, this gives you so much freedom to move around and discover all the country.
Don't try and circumvent the laws of Spain. You are a guest, pay your way instead of having to look over your shoulder all the time.
Don't take advise from the Bar, seek out long term residents who really know the score.
Trust no officials without serious enquiry.
Treat it as an adventure to be enjoyed and not tolerated.
Above all be honest, there is no shame in going home if it doesn't suit. There are no medals for long service.
