Then you will understand that those of us with special needs just take bit longer to grasp somethings.

Please be patient with us, we are trying.

Special needs ?
At last you've shown your true colours.

With some regret I'll now join the rest of the crew who've had enough.

This is happening more and more.
I suppose the "smiley" was intended to indicate that some (not all) of the posters are missed by me even though some of their posts were unpleasant to those they disagreed with.
In other words a forum site where everyone agreed on everything would be boring. Perhaps you can help advise the correct smiley.

Just seen your further post I would think that "their special needs" referring to particular people is a different concept to just the words "special needs".

That's one in ten for the whole of Spain, the figures for the heavily populated expat regions are much higher. In the greater Torrevieja and Orihuela regions the actual number are 15,000 and 9,000 respectively, unbelievably high numbers, and more than half of the local expat population.

I live here and can vouch for the accuracy of the numbers. On my way down to the newsagents later, I will pass a shopping centre where six out of seven former British businesses are lying empty.

Apart from the newsagent, another five of the six businesses there have closed and the owners have returned to the UK. It's a scene of devastation, British expats are fleeing Spain in ever greater numbers.

That is really very sad to read as it means hopes and dream have been shattered. It suggests that Spain is a very hard place to be at the moment. Be they expats or Spanish.

Spain is fantastic if you have a good income and speak the lingo.

The problems arise when you need to earn money or age creeps up on you and you can't cope with bureaucracy and the language.

A lot of help that's taken for granted in the UK is simply not available in Spain.

My advice (to myself) and others nearing retirement who dream of a 'life in the sun' is;

Don't sell your UK property. Rent it out.

Plan to stay for a period of time.

Use the rent you receive to pay someone else's, this gives you so much freedom to move around and discover all the country.

Don't try and circumvent the laws of Spain. You are a guest, pay your way instead of having to look over your shoulder all the time.

Don't take advise from the Bar, seek out long term residents who really know the score.

Trust no officials without serious enquiry.

Treat it as an adventure to be enjoyed and not tolerated.

Above all be honest, there is no shame in going home if it doesn't suit. There are no medals for long service.

Yes. I have already reported it.

Oh boy how frivilous we've become. I must admit it does make a change from discussing Muzzies.

We have a holiday home in a largely Brit community on the CB.

Lately, we have noticed a trend (say last 18 months), where many Residents have been spending some serious money - expensive cars, building work, landscaping etc.

My theory is that some haven't got quite enough money to return to the UK (certainly not to maintain their current lifestyle) - so they have decided to blow it, so to speak.

I know of one couple who have admitted same.

Non resies seem to be the poor relations in our street!

I have a second theory - interesting to see if someone else mentions it.

In my current area, greater Torrevieja, I hesitate to use the word 'greater' but there are practically no expats in the city itself while the surrounding area is packed out with them, 15,000 of them went home last year, including a few thousand Germans.

The Spanish authorities could see the exodus coming and sent trade missions to Moscow and Beijing. The Chinese seem to be invisible but 5,000 Russians, not of the best quality, are very much in your face and frighten the life out of some expats who have no doubt left because of them.

Just another reason to consider and selling your house at half price doesn't appeal to many expats either.

Doesn't sound attractive I'm afraid.

Will you stay HBG?
