I agree about keeping threads on topic. I keep getting emails regarding a new comment, only to find it's not really relevant!!
Am a bit new to all this.
It'll be interesting to see what comments there are when Rubalcaba & Rajoy go head to head on TV soon.
Personally, but with a bit of tongue in cheek, I distrust politicians with beards or moustaches (or both)!!! Hope that doesn't open the flood gates to abusive replies!!

life must be very short and boring in 1:1 conversations where you are involved as the subject matter would be discussed and over in a couple of seconds.
all conversations can and do drift away from the original but then thats called Real Life not a J2 and friends imposed life.

and yes this posting is not about the PP, election but could be about change but not related change.

Threads do go off topic, a bit of banter can be fun. After a couple of posts it's not on though. Newbies must feel a bit miffed if they do a search to find the posts are nothing like the thread title:thumbdown:

I can only say what I have seen. In my own case, I have spent almost 11 years in the UK, I am married to a British guy with almost no Spanish at all, I have always worked in English environments and I only speak Spanish to my mum when we talk on the phone.

I have met maybe other 8 Spanish people here, and I would certainly avoid 2 of those as I simply don't like them. I have to say that I was the very first Spanish person working in one of my jobs here and by the time I left there were 3 more. I left the place showing that we had a better work culture than many British people could imagine, as the slow life in a small village with siesta is not the same as in a big city, and when one is a foreigner and a woman one has to prove everyday that one is a good asset, especially as a second language was not needed for in my position.

I was responsible of 4 British colleagues, and 2 of those were terrible workers, one was half decent and the other one was fantastic. I ended up doing the work of other 2, who I would have been extemely happy to fire had I had the power to. And no, I wouldn't have got Spanish people per se, just good workers so I wouldn't have to end up doing their work without being paid to do so.

When I meet my Spanish friends in London, maybe 2-3 times a year because we don't live close, there are British friends and other nationalities around as we do a large reunion to meet everybody. We all talk in English, and I don't live anywhere close to any other Spanish in my village.

So I only speak English in the UK. I can only remember a couple times when I met with Spanish friends only and that was to help with Spanish visitors who could not speak English. We are completely integrated in the UK, as we understand that when one lives in a foreign country one simply HAS TO integrate, that means learn the culture and language. This is the kind of foreigners one wants in one's own country.

I worry about Spain just as I worry about the UK, and I know many people like me. Spain is far from perfect, just as the UK, and in the current times things are even worse. Patriotism doesn't mean defending your country at all cost, because many attacks have a good ground. I attack both Spain and the UK and would like many things to change in both. :(

Integrated foreigners is something that both the PSOE and the PP in Spain and any other political party in the UK want. So do the nationals of any country.

I've worked with Spanish people both in the UK and in Spain, and to date I've only ever worked with highly competent and hard-working individuals. This is not to say you can't find lazy or incompetent Spanish staff - I came across a couple in a Valencian bar-restaurant who made Laurel and Hardy look good - but there are plenty of good workers around. I don't think this changes under different governments though!

Cracking post and so true. It points out an important distiction.

A patriot loves his or her country. A nationalist hates other countries and their occupants.

They used to say, patriotism is the last resort of a scoundrel (ie "I did it for my country!")

I always say that patriotism is the first resort of the fascist/nationalist.

I'm not defending anyone, I will be objective ...

1) Do any of you lived in Spain in 1996? The country was equal to or worse than now. Such was the country at that time when it was PP, following the departure of Felipe Gonzalez (PSOE) Do you know how is country when the PP leave in 2004? The country had a super-avit

2) To say that the PP is right, like the PSOE of Zapatero, is left, is very, very stupid. The left and right are for the civil war and Franco's dictatorship. The PP showed in his previous term be 1000 times more tolerant than the government supposedly "progressive" of Zapatero, than also of ruin, has bombarded citizens with fines, fees, censorship, bans, and all type of stupid moralizing. And this have been a reality, unless than you not may know because you have not lived here the last 8 years. Anyone who has lived here and deny the evidence, is that truly is stupid or unwilling to see reality

I had never lived so poorly, nor economically nor socially, or in terms of freedoms, since than governs Zapatero. And I've lived all governments since democracy, I know perfectly well what I mean. If there were justice in Spain, Zapatero should have the same fate as the president of Iceland, who is on trial for his criminal incompetence. It's amazing how this asshole has been president for almost 8 years.

The only thing that has managed was squander the super-avit of the PP, make life impossible to the citizens, destroy our foreign policy, and divide the country. Each time the PSOE has come to govern, finished ruining the country. People in this country not learn

Well I think the opinion polls say it all, though I get the same vibes from my Spanish pals.
Will the real Mr Bean step forward, seems that the Shoemaker has really put his foot in it this time.
What amazes me are these staged events where he still seems to have a thousand or so ppl. still cheering him on,..or are they maybe just trained monkeys ? :unsure:
