of wheel hubs, before mounting, then found out alot of chaf was clogging up, the
free-running tests.Hence a drop on quality product. The Union didnt strike on this,
but went to management, to query and qualify, job postions and responibilty, for
department 'quality control'. They 1st denied any knowledge of any management
order, but then the Foremens commitee got involved, and management then said
That was a misunderstanding.
It is also to be mentioned that the 'Quality control' were not the type to ask for
down tools time. They did tend to lean to the ' right'.
Shortly afterwards it was the Quality Control that began to be Outsourced from
Management as an unappropiate and unnecesssry department.
The skilled labour then asked for intervention and support from the Union.
Even then , there were more discussions, before there was a work force support,
to down tools for I believe 1/2 a day, to re-instate the department and its workers.
There had already been voluntary redundencies and retirement that had cut the position by a 1/3, which again the work force, with union accepted some outsourcing,
but for common sense, the group Quality control must stay.
I must admit that I recall the expression 'Friday afternoon cars', however I had an awful VW Beetle 1.3, and a Toyota Corolla, both being rust buckets.

Personally I remember people slagging off UK cars and then buying from abroad.
I believe they then to a certain extent put themselves into a position where they had to keep stum.

One of my first compaany cars was a Morris Ital ( Marina ) to keep them in a straight line most of us had paving slabs in the boot.
After a series of accidents one of which was nearly fatal the company took the cars back and we were given a choice.
Not one person in the salesforce went for another BL car.
They were 110% , crap of the first order.

the Anglia had pedals that were off centre, so your legs were always 25-30% off to the left
the chance of hitting the accelorator instead of the brake were better than evens

and that is the car I did most of my learning on !

one of our sales reps had an Ital, after 2 years the driver's seat was held in place with a wooden plank.
when he returned it for a Cortina the Sales Director used the Ital to take a customer out to lunch - "(expletives deleted) most embarrassing time of my (expletives deleted) life.!!!"
Said rep had the Cortina taken away from him until he had taken the Ital to agents to put all its "quirks" right.

A friend of mine was SD for a major co, where the accounts dept said that he had to reduce the standard of car issued to reps. He said he would give up his Granada GXL with all the buttons if it meant his guys had a decent car, where they didn't have time off with "cortina back".
Accounts won.

Did mine in a 1930s Rover, poor man's Rolls Royce they were called then, ran as smooth and sweet as a sewing machine.

There was a pedal issue with some of the French cars not so long ago, whereby instead of having independant linkage for the brake and accelerator they had (maybe still have) a botched up heath robinson cross linkage connections under the footwell from the EU-type left side pedals to the UK-right side.

The problem being that with a little pressure from the front passengers feet they were able to control speed and braking without realizing it, leaving the drivers believing that their cars had a mind all of their own.

Remind us again, the reason given by that UKIP chappie for the recent floods and gales in Britain? (and if I recollect correctly you intend to vote for that party). I know what to be more afraid of..
