I know JDR is more than capable of answering for himself - but I think yes, you might be thick or at least missing the point.
I think his point is why are the UK government not prepared to pay for the healthcare of people (who have contributed via their NI payments) whilst they are resident in another EU member state. The mechanism for spain or any other country in the EU to claim this money back is already in place via the E111.
Sorry JDR if I have misinterpreted your point.

As you may of noticed from my name West london is very close to my heart , (may be for not much longer !) , have seen a number of building sites around Fulham but not too many arid rolling hills, still did see plenty of donkeys at stamford bridge sunday but they were from nottingham !
As a Man City season ticket holder, I'm sick to death of watching donkeys this season.

oh dear, this is all getting out of hand
Surely the main thing the programme highlighted last night was that people just dont know, in that, BEFORE you come and live in Spain you need find out what (if anything) you would be entitled to should the worse case scenario arise
Personally I dont see how being fluent would of assisted any of those people
Have a nice day everyone

Well I hadn't read this thread until now as I'm not interested in TV programmes about Spain usually.
Mourinho, I niavely thought we were part of the European Union, but clearly not the case from your point of view, and I'm sure the Spaniards were very happy to have Europen funds (British taxpayers money, Britain being one of the higher contributors to the EU) pour in over the last years to improve their country.
But at the end of the day, from the Spanish point of view, yes people should research. I know I have 2 years (maybe more in Valencia) and then I have to get private care for a year until my wife reaches retirement. I will then be covered also, and as part of the EU I feel I am entitled to that.
As far as the language is concerned, and your general apparant view of English people in Spain, do you somehow think that the average person can become fluent in Spanish in such a short time? Its not an easy undertaking and only comes with time. Why do we keep coming accross people who have such a dim view of the Britain living in Spain. In the EU we all theoretically have the right to live where we want. There is no law to say you have to learn the language, God knows in reverse there are enough immigrants in the UK that can't speak English. What do we do? ......... we print all our documents and sineage in 23 different languages to help them. Not saying they necessarily should, but I went to the Police station (where many foreign nationals have to go regularly) yesterday to get a duplicate NIE certificate and of course all Spanish.
I just don't understand why you have to be so derogatory about Brits living in Spain. Please explain your mind set to me

I have only just read this post which is a follow on from my earlier thread - Sick In The Sun.
I am gobsmacked by Mourinho's attitude.
All pensioners that have an E121 or E111 are entitled to free Spanish healthcare. I am not sure about the free 2 years but I expect it is the same. However the costs for these priveliges are funded by the British government. It does not cost Spain a cent!!
Mourinho I think you are forgetting that Spain has been the biggest benefactor of EEC funds in the last few years than any other developed country in the EEC - what has happened to all this money one wonders??
The point that Mitzyboy made about forms being printed only in Spanish is very valid indeed. One shining example is medication which only contains information in Spanish. Even in Thailand when you purchase something or have a presciption from the chemist the information regarding this is in Thai and English.
It is a concern I think that there is no after-care help in Spain when somebody falls seriously ill. This is a point that should be addressed.

I agree with mitzyboy and mitzipurr Why make such comments when you dont live in Spain and what happens doesnt affect you ?
I dont see why any one has to explain to any one why they live where they do. This is freedom of movement, and that has been happening in the UK for many years.

I think everybody is missing the point!! Mourinho is a Chelsea (Chelski) fan, and as such can only ever have a one-sided view of any subject, and as everybody knows they didnt exist until about 2003/4 anyway.
Therefore he is 3 years old. Now you may understand his mindset! Ha!!

Calm down everyone!!!
If we expect uniformity then surely we should be looking at how healthcare is reciprocated right across the EU ?? I know in France that if one becomes a resident after retirement then one goes in at the very top of their three tier system. Does anyone know what happens in other EU countries ?
I suppose that the poster who makes the point about people not having paid into the system if they head over to Spain before retirement raises an interesting issue. Are contributions deemed to be ongoing until one retires or cumulative ?? Is it right for the British Govt to impose a curfew?? I suppose they must, or we could have a situation where people choose to live in countries where there are expensive treatments not sanctioned in Britain and the bill could be enormous. I would like to know if the bill for the Spanish living in Britain is refunded by Spain, especially in areas of ongoing care, for eg Cancer and HIV. And does Spain limit this to two years?? What we need is uniformity and fairness.

I also would like the answer to the last paragraph of Poolloungers excellent post. Does the Spanish Goverment pay for its citizens health care recieved in the UK and are they limited to two years? Perhaps one of our Spanish friends could answer this? I agree we need fairness to all.
