As I recall it the Turks were the injured party who the Greek Cypriots tried to oust. It was only at this stage that the Turkish army invaded and took over half the island.

If you are looking for an entertaining book try Bernard Cornwells "The Fort" that deals with part of Maine that the Brits held to the end. Not that the British Commander wanted to, he expected to fire a couple of shots and surrender to the Americans.

And who wants to throw them out?

But, according to the treat, as soon as Gibraltar is no longer part of Britain it will become Spanish.... we are just waiting for their silly independence claims ... :p And of course... no water is recognised as British...

Ug! What make you say that? uuuuhhh.... monkey wants banana...

If one can trust Wikipedia, Paranthropus are a different genus, and developed into gorillas and some gracilis went to become the bald monkeys we are now and others became chimpanzees... but if you've seen the planet of the apes you will know you'd better don't mess with the gorillas!

Gibraltar was to succumb to the plague or a serious epidemic beginning the nineteenth century, if not for the help of the Spanish...

I ask myself why sometimes we have been so idiots...

When the Brits gave back Hong Kong and Kowloon, the Spanish must have thought the Foreign Office may pop round to see them about Gibraltar, after all anything ceeded in perpetuity doesn't really mean anthing does it.

The problem was the only part that had to be returned to China was the New Territories, which were RENTED for 99 years 1898. The main island was ceded in perpetuity under the Treaty of Nanking of 1842 and Kowloon under the Treaty of Beijing of 1860 after a supposed assassination attempt on the British Governor.

When will Spain give back Melilla and Cueta to Morocco ?

I have asked many Spaniards that question and the reply is:-

But that is different

There is also the question of the numerous small islands, by small we are looking at football pitch size that they kept to claim the fishing rights.
Like Perejil were they sent in a frigate because 4 Moroccan shepherds slept the night there

The answer I have heard is "because they were never Morocco's in the first place".

Surely the answer is that they are similar to the Isle of Wight or even northern Ireland (but not the Channel Islands)? The population in Ceuta or Melilla will vote in the national elections come November. Gibraltar is an overseas territory, not an integral part of the UK.

All academic anyway. The minute British forces leave Gib, the current world power (probably the US) will step in.
