We are out now tolls still alive and kicking.The car hire company thinks they are here to stay even though the Portugese do not want them.We will see

Bit like the Dartford Crossing. Tolls were meant to be lifted once bridge was paid for. That was a few years back and we're still paying. No government is going to kill off a cash cow.

Scottish Government did. All our toll bridges now defunct, Tay, Forth, Erskine and Sky

I thought that the tolls on the A22 were not a cash cow but a loss maker for the government. So few people use the A22 that the government have to pay the company that runs it more in subsidies etc than is raised in fees. Which is more likely why it will be difficult to reduce them as it will cost too much to buy out of the contract.
