Hi there
We moved to the Costa del sol a few months ago from Cheltenham. We are enroute to Panama (bocas del toro) one of the few places in the caribbean to buy beautiful beach front land at a reasonable price.
I, before we came to Spain was particulary bemused by the "english settlement" here however, maybe we should all remember why so many people are leaving the UK, taxation, controlled, etc etc etc - without getting political, look at the faux pas today with mr g brown and the constant jutification of how they "lost in the post" so many personal details of uk residents, (some were maybe paying tax, which is worth a thought!)
We are around the San Pedro area, and whilst nothing more than a building site (in some areas) we have met some very intelligent like minded people who are in business and do make money.
All I would say is that it's easy to be critical of the brits on the coast but's let's make it perfectly clear that we spent most of our time in the UK concerning ourselves with immigration, taxation, weather and general working to live frustration !
Let's support people rather than put them down and if you don't like it long term - move to Panama!!!!

A gestoria is basically an accountant in Spain, trained and legal to handle your affairs.
I live in San Pedro, Marbella. Still very spanish. I used to live in Fuengirola, but its too large now and for me has lost its appeal. Marbella town is still very spanish if you know where to go and speak the language (I do)
Workwise all sorts going on, its doesnt die a death like many places - up the coast to Almeria etc is mainly retirees or holiday makers on huge complexes in the middle of no-where
And we get the best weather, bar none! Oh, in winter you can swim in the sea, yet 2 hours later be in the snow for ski-ing or snowballing.
Plenty of activities and certainly no where better for me - and I have been here nearly 13 years (this feb) and coming to Spain for nearly 30 - now THAT makes me feel old!

Hi there
I think I may have read some posts around people saying how "british" it is here and choosing el campo. My parents live in estacion de gaucin (very rural but then my dad is from gibraltar so ..) , I think sometimes, people like to impress, pretend to be Spanish, which they are not, and generally run down cds. It's a million miles away from where we will be living in 6 months times (no rainforest or deadly snakes on your doorstep) but I, like to think we are not so much up (UOA) not to enjoy lots of different experiences, long live CDS and its people, whatever the cultural mix as long as people are contributing and happy..

I read one of your recent posts on another forum about life in Marbella. You were recounting your day, taking a walk on the paseo maritimo with your dog and OH etc. Sounded perfect. Really made me feel that I am on the right track pursuing a move to Marbella, that too from Canada, not like the UK where most people seem to be coming from.
Yes I dont make millions, but thats somehow not as important as my health and life. Oh and the education here is far above the UK standard as well!
So its not for everyone, but then no-where is!!

I go to a local panaderia in san pedro, large coffee, freshly sqeezed orange juice and toasted seeded integral roll with olive oil - only 5 euros.
Both my kids went to spanish schools, the junior school was fabulous, but I was most disappointed witht eh instituto - like a secondary modern, and with gypsy kids who didnt want to be there now having to be there under the newly enforced truancy laws!
So, both went to private spanish school - you get in on merit and its partly state funded, daughter now 17 doing Bachillerato, heading for uni next year with 4 languages and all the sciences under her belt intending to study bio-chemistry at Salamanca uni. Son is 16 next year, was held backa year for not trying hard enough (typical lazy so and so) but doing well in La Latina (spanish private, Marbella) and possibly looking to go via the modulo route for electrical or mechanical engineering.
Not so keen on Terra Sana, I feel its gone downhill somewhat over the last year or so and last meal I had there I was disappointed. In Campana there is a fab little restaurant, I think actually French and they do menu del dia for 8 euros. I had large salad starter, followed by pork staeks, hubby had sirloin, veg, tiramisu and drink - will definately be back!
If you need an english fry then Tricky Rickys guadalmina is one of the better ones!
ps try the Blue Palm in Marbella - had excellent sunday lunch last sunday and going there tonight to try the ribs!
Otherwise my favourites are chiringuito san pedro for fish/salad on the beach, Pasta cafe for Italian and Beckitts marbella for steak! Hungry now!!!
