Let's not play that card, Dick.
Much as I am unsupportive of Dave, I'm sure he will have made ample provision for his Muslim customers who are discouraged by Islamic custom from paying or receiving interest (as the banks and building socs do), and he will well know, with his business interests of the area the value of translating his literature into Urdu.
Besides, I don't think his thriving minibus business and its proximity to Burnli are wholly unconnected.

It is not - in interviews he has openly said that the idea for Burnley Savings & Loan germinated from the fact that customers of his business were finding that they were unable to obtain credit from the high street banks, so he lent them the money himself as it was harming his business - before Burnley Savings & Loan was started.

your telling me you trust the banks as is ??
they have taken your money making promises, reneged on those promises, lost you money, taken your pension and taken all the profits before telling you there wasn't enough to pay you anything#
their friends have taken your pension and run off with that with gay abandon, spending it all over the place and telling you the money you have put in has shrunk "due to market conditions"
they run around underselling the £, the $, the €, to make a profit at the end of the week but its funny they used their money and never yours (or mine) so we only see the losses and not the profits.
haven't you noticed that the only people making money out of the money markets is those who are in those markets ??
and as to some upstart who comes along and takes them on in their own battlefield - well we can't have that so demand he be closed down instantly or sooner and give us all that lovely money to lose for those gullible idiots who want to make a (small) profit.

Those forum members making references to passports being needed to either enter or leave Burnley, by the way, may be interested to know that according to the 2011 census, 86.57% of the town's population is White British.

Or maybe they wouldn't, preferring to believe urban myth or the right wing rags.

British expats is great. You get the same people who complain of the Spanish being racist against them then complaining about different races in Britain. Where else can you get that!?

I thought the comments were referring to backward Northerners rather than people of different skin colours

The under-privileged in the UK get more money through handouts than almost any other nationality on Earth. I'm not sure that me giving them a hundred pound loan would really be a help at all
The biggest problem in the UK is that the benefits culture doesnt fit well with an entrepreneurial culture. You cant be on benefits and also setting up your own business
I wouldnt mind investing into businesses in Spain for young talented people, but there has been a huge culture in Spain of grants which almost everyone has wasted over the past 10 years or so. I want to give my money to people who intend to pay it back through a successful business, that is what happens in Kiva

Hmm, I'd need to learn more about that one once it is up and running for a few years

The whole point is that it's for people who don't WANT benefits or handouts, they want to start their own businesses but they can't get loans from regular banks because they live in deprived areas. Postcode lottery in reverse.
