Burnley is quite a quaint old English town. I doubt it would score less than 39 if asked to name a dead British town on Pointless.

Actually I never thought it was that bad a place, I lived about 7 miles away and we used to drive "over the tops" most Saturdays to do our shopping. The countryside just outside town is lovely. There was an article in the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago saying that the aerospace industry there is doing really well, especially a firm called Aircelle, and a new engineering college is to open there shortly. Good luck to them!

There is a history in East Lancashire of a few BNP candidates doing well at elections then doing absolutely nothing (at best) once elected, not even turning up for meetings, and at worst being convicted of criminal offences and having to resign.

It seems this thread has degenerated from having a dig at nice guy Dave who is simply trying to play the whiteman, into a full scale witch hunt to blacken the name of the good people of Burnley.
I've always found it to be quite a friendly civilised sort of place compared to a few of those much more desperate towns and cities a little further South in Lancashire.
I made some great friends from Burnley and thereabouts during my travels and anything further from the typical N.F. mentality I could hardly imagine.

Remarkably, they prefer Burnley to Quesada.

The BBC link refers to County Councillor Sharon Wilkinson who is still on the council

This is one of her former colleagues on Burnley Council, just the sort of person one would want representing one's interests, no?

I had, on numerous occasions, been delighted to escort a young lady home from the 'Cats Whiskers' in the 1970's....And more than once have frequented ' The Hop' in Padiham....Halcyon...And at times 'Dangerous days!'

Certainly not.
This week a charming young lady from the Caixa Laietana (now Bankia) bank helped me pay a sterling cheque in to my Spanish euro account. I didn't know if it was possible, and nor did the woman serving me or the rest of the bank staff.
Strangely they had never done this before, and they had never seen a British cheque before either. Politely, they got the job done despite the lengthening queue.
Now, I know I will be able to get that money back whenever I want, cos the Spanish Government and the European Union says so, not a second hand minibus salesman from Burnley.
That's my kind of bank.
I'm all for the little man in business, but not when you're messing about with people's savings.

they have taken your money making promises, reneged on those promises, lost you money, taken your pension and taken all the profits before telling you there wasn't enough to pay you anything#
their friends have taken your pension and run off with that with gay abandon, spending it all over the place and telling you the money you have put in has shrunk "due to market conditions"
they run around underselling the £, the $, the €, to make a profit at the end of the week but its funny they used their money and never yours (or mine) so we only see the losses and not the profits.
haven't you noticed that the only people making money out of the money markets is those who are in those markets ??
and as to some upstart who comes along and takes them on in their own battlefield - well we can't have that so demand he be closed down instantly or sooner and give us all that lovely money to lose for those gullible idiots who want to make a (small) profit.

- they insist that people visit their office in person to sign up!
