Re: The Sunburn Thread
use kids brand suncream .... factor 30 on the kids label stuff is much more protective, lasts longer and is very waterproof.
son number 1 tans well so needs a lower factor
son number 2 is a strawberry blonde/redhead, very pale skin and even though he's in the sun every day normally for 4 hours he doesnt ever get burnt (and spends alot if it in the water). The kids suncream really does work very well.

that's very possible...doesn't the water actually increase the effects of the rays?

Good point. Even when you think you're in the shade you're not completely protected. I try to wear factor 50 at all times (fair skinned and burn easily) but I think the danger is those "oh, i'll only be out for 10 mins" as you go to hang out the washing / nip to the shops etc. Those 10 mins all add up.

Yes, it is cumulative, so nipping out in the sun 6 times for 10 minutes through the day is the same as sitting out in it for an hour. You get tanned in the shade because of scattered UV radiation. It has nothing to do with heat, which is infrared radiation. It is determined by atmospheric conditions and proximity to the sun. Both UVA and UVB can cause skin damage, although the former can't pass through glass. A tan without burning is still sun damagem and while your tanmight fade, the damage remans forever. Always wear a hat and a long-sleeve shirt of a dark material, always wear sunblock factor 30+, and try to avoid the sunniest part of the day (approximately 10:00 - 15:00).
I have quite a deep tan that never seems to really fade, have never burned........don't sunbathe

Re: The Sunburn Thread
As mentioned in my first post, it bears little relation to how hot it is. Most people get burned when the temperature is slightly lower for the simple reason that they incorrectly equate burning to heat. Wrong.

I was agreeing with you (except to point out that the hottest time of day is not really as you stated)
