I doubt if anyone outside Holland would attempt to justify the Dutch tactics.
Being the biggest event in the football, no doubt the ref considered his responsibilities to the whole football world in general, rather than just ending the contest prematurely in the first half, for which he would also have been pilloried anyway.
Quite simply he was in a no win situation.
I don't remember seeing such childish behaviour from the great Pele or Bobby Charlton or Stanley Mathews who endured that sort of treatment on a regular basis.
Football in the UK was a much tougher game back then, but there was also far more respect for referees.
It began to change when British clubs began getting involved in European competitions, where they soon realized that they had to adapt to the different interpretation of the rules and the much more childish and petulant behaviour prevalent in many European countries.

Traditionally British footballers are thugs and leg breakers, all throughout the system. They think skill is something for ponces and prefer a good 50 50 tackle.
This has left England being the worst of the major footballing nations (just look at the international team records!)
I had my ankle snapped in two by such a thug when I was 16, the ref and the manager said it was my fault as I shouldnt have nutmegged the player! That's the kind of backward thinking that means British footballers are lightyears away from say their Spanish or Brazilian counterparts.

Just took your advice and looked at the records which show that England are leading Spain in the results of their various meetings.

Also interesting that the English premier still attracts the greatest number of supporters both at the matches and also with regard to Worldwide audiences.
No, not as skillful, but much more positive and exciting, than most other leagues, where following some of the best teams is often about as exciting as watching paint dry.
With regard to foul play and dangerous tackles, there is every bit as much going on in other European and S.American leagues, the only difference being that they tend to be much more skillful and devious in the way they go about it.

The German Bundesliga has higher crowds than the Premierleague
Only 40% of players in the Premier League are British, 70% of La liga players are Spanish.
In terms of leg breaking tackles, I've only seen 1 in 3 years of watching La Liga while the Arsenal team seems to suffer one every season.
Don't believe the Murdock propaganda machine!
And what league is more exciting is a matter of opinion. I personally find watching Barca or Madrid play more exciting than Man U or Chelsea. While a Bolton Wigan game is my idea of football hell!

I was talking of major international tournament championships. Spain 3, England 1. Germany has 7! France, Italy, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina also have better records than England.

As you say, what is most exciting is a matter of opinion,so in that respect I don't think the rest of the World can all be wrong.
Punters go along to matches to be entertained and generally prefer the cut and thrust of a fast and furious game, as against watching paint dry.
OK Barca can be nice to watch on a good day and occasionally Real but the rest are not even at the races now.
Also bear in mind that Germany has a 60% bigger population than the UK,but they have nowhere near 60% greater attendances.

Appreciate the complement.
I'm an old fashioned no nonsense type of guy, and if I was ref the very first one to come anywhere near me or question my decision would be straight off the park and away for an early bath.
Same would apply to the second one.
After that I would expect that respect would be the order of the day.
If not, then pretty soon I would be the only one left on the pitch.
