That used to be the case, but as I understand it most modern cars also need a battery to stabilize the voltage which is more critical with present day circuits.

I think it's about time to remove ourselves from the grid. I think we'll invest in a combination of things; generator, solar, wind. And LOTS of batteries.

They can sue me if they don't like it.
Oh they will... the Spanish 'solar' police have been given the powers to kick your door in without a warrant.. http://dailycaller.com/2013/11/14/sp...axing-the-sun/

Re: your friends no campo, they are okay to be off grid IF and only IF there is no grid available for them to connect to. If you are living in an area where there is an existing electrical grid, you must plug into the grid and not have any off grid system installed. By 'Special Decree' ... and they say that we in the UK don't have a constitution.. . Why are the Spaniards not up in arms regarding this? Boa sorte.

It's two or three years old but the principle remains the same. I'll try to summarise the main points. It's a Bloomberg report so the currency's in dollars.

1. "Power from the most-efficient photovoltaic plants costs utilities about $275 per megawatt-hour to produce compared with about $60 for a coal-fired plant".

2. To get the Spanish solar industry up and running the Spanish Government offered solar energy producers 44 cents per kilowatt hour compared to the industry 4 cents per KH. This price was to be guaranteed for 25 years.

3. At these prices everyone and their grannies piled into solar power generation including the main power generators.

4. Spain was quickly saddled with $126 billion worth of obligations for solar subsidies and this was growing all the time.

5. The government had to cut the subsidies because it had too much uneconomic solar power generation and was/is costing the Government a fortune. Especially in the Crisis.

6. They are now trying to discourage new installations by making it uneconomic to run if you can't store the power in a battery, and moving people back towards the much cheaper grid power (my interpretation). Without Government subsidies it's going to take you 25 years to get your solar investment back.

7. Far from being in bed with the government, the producers are up in arms because they have been saddled with a hell of a lot of uneconomic kit.

You are partially right. The fact is, solar technology especially Solar PV is improving by leaps and bounds. And the price of installations has come down considerably in the past 2-3 years thanks to the Chinese who produce about 50% of the world's solar PV collectors and associated equipment today.

Compare this with the German model which the British have adopted with the unfit FiT (feed in tariffs). The German inverters while well engineered say you MUST be solely connected to the grid or your installation will be unsupported. A lot of German manufacturers like Diehl are tied in with the arms manufacturers and hence big Government. The sun in free. I for one am against handing the state control of this resource which should be for everyone to use as they see fit . Why are the Spanish people not up in arms regarding this unjust and draconian law?
I ask myself this. The only answer I have had is that Spaniards have been told that Solar power is unsustainable because of the cost of Photo voltaics and the over use of land. Both of which are a very effective LIE propagated by the people who's agenda is to build nuclear power plants or who own fracking plants and Biofuel plants etc. I always use the expression. "Cherchez la femme"...in this case the 'femme' being money. Where is the money...who stands to gain? If it's the people....money won't be invested and lies will be told. And in my experience even very intelligent people have failed to discern these lies. The only reason any technology is expensive is when it's kept from being mainstream. I personally intend to be a solar bandit if at all possible We've already started building a hot water panel to augment my bathwater. (I have a very big bath but a very empty wallet! )

Oh well done about the hot water panel! Bad luck about lack of capital.. unfortunately you need a bit of capital to invest in the technology although you can be creative a save here and there. Iºm bringing two heating radiators over that I am going to convert int hot water collectors. They wonºt be as effective as proper evacuated tube panels but come in at a about a quarter of the price..
