Yes theres a link! But lung cancer isnt the most common form of cancer, non smokers can contract it, even without having passively smoked! However, my point is that the scientific proof that smoking kills isnt based on 100% conclusive results, its based on correlation (a calculated assumption). Its a bit like saying that red and processed meat causes cancer, which was in the news a few months ago - er......!!!?????????

Smoking isnt good for you, it MAY cause serious health issues! Its a disgusting habit and its a shame people start, but its not the worst drug in the world (no.13, with alcohol no.3 I think??), its not the most socially offensive drug (I'd sooner meet a smoker than a drunk) and its not worth the cost of banning it in public places - when they arent banning selling ciggies!

You cannot be serious.

Do you really think a ban on ciggies could ever work or be enforced ?
The Worldwide black market would be enormous.
The cost of trying to police it would be enormous.
The loss of tax to the govt.would be enormous, apart from having to be made up in other ways from ppls. pockets.

Alcohol is a totally seperate issue and has nothing to do with the problems caused by smokers.

If you go and live on your own on a desert island, where no-one can see or hear you, you can do what the hell you like, and that includes drinking, smoking and inhaling your own farts.

The minute your actions start to impinge on those of others, they have to be moderated. If your 'freedoms' have the power to harm others, then why the hell should you be allowed them?

Smoking in front of children is disgusting. It predisposes them to start, and whatever the risk in passive smoking may be to adults, it's a damn sight worse for kids.

Yes and no. I don't want to eat my food and breathe any smoke at all. It really makes me feel ill. In our favourite bar, there is a walled off area where the smokers can eat in peace behind glass walls that keep the smoke out of our noses.

A compromise like that I can accept.

Prohibition would be dumb, dumb, dumb.

But its not about compromise Jo... If smokers want to kill themselves then great (and I for one DO think that smoking directly causes health problems, not just Cancer... there are over 4000 chemicals in Tar... 60 are KNOWN to cause cancer...) but when you have to breathe that smoke in its not nice... its not nice when I have to walk through smokers pollution to get to the bar... and I am a little tired of the whole "drinking causes problems as well" issue... not ALL drinkers are spotty faced ASBO collectors.. some of us like a couple of pints after work and a social chat with mates, if that offends smokers then I suggest they don't bother going to a pub after all... I can now sit in a pub and NOT stink like a Northern Drinking Mans Club! Bliss....

Re: Smoking ban AGAIN!!!

"Compromise" would mean some bars allow smoking for those who chose to and some bars dont for those people who dont want to! Or a smoking room and a non smoking room on the same premises - its not difficult!?

Anyway, its become a pointless discussion! The ban in Spain is apparently happening on 2nd Jan and it remains to be seen how its received and implemented!

Just another thing I hate about the evil weed.
The whole world and his wife is expected to stop everything and wait while some desperate baccy junkie gets his/her fix.

Canada. In Ontario stores are not allowed to display tabacco products. A pack costs a lot. People are not allowed to smoke in a car with children, within 8 meters of an entrance to a public building, on terraces that have a roof or un umbrella over the head. Why do you think all these restrictions that would drastically cut revenues for the government. Because it costs the same government huge amounts of money to treat illnesses which are caused or worsened by smoking. I don't think they took a guess, they have enough data to determine that smoking kills or causes expensive treatments.

In the streets, cafes, you see lots of elderly folk puffing away! surely that in itself is a sign as to how bad smoking is??? NOT! surely they'd all be dead if smoking kills.

I know so many people who have or who have died from cancer - they werent all smokers. I also know lots of people who havent got cancer and they're not all non smokers.

I agree its not a pleasant habit, but freedom of choice is being taken away, not only from the people, but the bar owners, which isnt right in a democracy

My mum was an alcoholic smoker and neither of those things killed her ... and she lived to 77, developed skin cancer (sun-related not smoke or alcohol), fell and broke her hip, and basically killed herself by refusing treatment (and who could blame her). So I agree Jo, there are far worse things happening all over the world to get uptight about.

Actually Jo doesn't 'believe' that the sun causes skin cancer either:rofl:
