... and I quote..."Lung carcinoma is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. About 85% of cases are related to cigarette smoking."

I was coming to that. I was going to wait until jojo had explained the significance of lung cancer not being the most common cancer.

Well it is happening. It has just been passed by legislation, so come 2nd January that is it except for terraces, prisons, old people´s homes and psychiatric units.

As previously mentioned, passing legislation is one thing, enforcing it is another.
Virtually identical laws were brought into force in France quite a while back. However they are not properly enforced and are openly flouted.
Bar owners turn a blind eye, rather than upset their customers and little or nothing is done about it.
I forecast a similar response and reaction in many parts of Spain.

Which is all very well unless you own the only foreign run bar for miles around. I just dare not flout it.

Yes, most bars and restaurants in France still have ashtrays on the tables. I thought the last smoking laws in Spain were going to be fairly comprehensive but after a few weeks everything seemed the same as ever.

It depends on what you read - I've just googled it and there are all manner of sites declaring which is the most common cancer - in men, in women, in children, in china, in the UK.............

Actually, most sites say in men its prostate and in women its breast, however, there are some that say Skin cancer is the highest! ....oh and yes there are a couple of sites that say lung cancer is one of the highest!

However, as my search thru google proves you can make anything say anything you want it to, it depends who writes it and who you chose to read!!!

What I would like to see is the real causes of cancer found - and dealt with. As I've already pointed out, and as we all know. Even if they could magically remove cigarettes from the equation, the incidence of cancer would still be growing - and at an alarming rate!

There is also the inherited cancers, all but one of my dads siblings died from bowel cancer, including him, and coincidentally so did my mum (neither smoked). I guess whether I smoke or not I'm a pretty high risk!

Shall we get lives now, its a depressing subject and it was only two months ago a very close friend of mine died a long and painful death from cancer (she gave up smoking 15 years ago)

A friend of mine lives in France and she says, in her local bar they've totally obliterated the "no smoking" sign by stubbing out cigarettes on it!??

You are mixing up your statistics Jo... You are quoting cancer incidents maybe (which by the way, worldwide in MEN Lung cancer is still the highest...) but if you look at cancer DEATHS Lung cancer is top for men again and second (just) for women... not all cancers kill people... few if any survive Lung cancer.
