Scruffy Rag Tag Bunch...

But in general I always found the dress code on the continent to be more relaxed.
So true here in Italy where jeans are accepted everywhere - school teachers and students wear them ... bank clerks wear them - town hall officials wear them .... not limited just to jeans either.
Jeans,Polo Shirts and Casual clothing now seem to be the order of the day in many places of officialdom.
I get the impression they feel much more relaxed and comfortable.
Appears that the Spanish are beginning to follow our Rag Tag Scruffy ways.

As some of you used to know, I used to own a shipping company and was the MD.
But I'm afraid, for you smart dresser fans, I tended to be there in a Polo shirt and casual trousers, rather than a suit.
I found it highly amusing how visitors to the office perceived me because of that ... they judged totally on how I was dressed and was mistaken for a warehouseman and a driver on numerous occasions and shock and embarrassment took over when it was explained to them.
But in general I always found the dress code on the continent to be more relaxed. When we went on business trips we always went in suits, but our customers and agents more often than not were in open neck shirts and casual trousers. They always thought the British way of dressing was stuffy!!
I believe you should dress in a way you are comfortable and let people judge you by your actions and manner .... Judging people by the way they dress is just plain wrong!

I don’t see how you can always know their nationality, whether they’re working or not, when they last washed, or is it designer stubble (like Enrique Iglesias). Equally, how do you judge others not kitted out in that manner? Are they definitely Spanish, in jobs, washed in the last three hours and clean shaven? Daft I call it.
Do you go round with a clipboard sniffing people?
Personally I have more of a problem with overly judgemental people than ones that simply didn’t shave that morning.

There is a difference between sloppy and casual, I would agree.
I tend to prefer the company of more casual people, so I don't see that as a bad thing, but I agree, usually a slob is a slob.
By that I mean someone who is shall we say 'A stranger to personal hygiene...' not someone who just dresses down.

A friend of mine, a policeman, used to say that on a depressingly regular basi he had to deal with people who made Wayne and Waynetta look like something out of 'Better Homes & Gardens.'

What I cant understand about todays clothes is why ppl.pay silly money for the dubious privilage of being used as a sandwich board with these silly labels in order to impress their friends or else make rich some multi national company who must laugh all the way to the bank watching the punters do all the donkey work for them.
Surely it is still possible to buy decent clothes without being used as an advertising hoarding.
I do well understand your point Rotor as there was a time, I thought much the same way.
I used to look on in despair quite a few year ago when blue jeans and blue denim jacket were almost the standard dress wear for a quite while and not only amongst the younger ones.
However with regard to your point about always looking smart and well turned out I will only say this.
I believe there probably comes a time in most ppls.lives when they realize there are much more important things to consider.

The only thing I object to is the wearing of t-shirts with well over the top slogans on. I remember being stood in a bank queue in England next to a middle aged man wearing a t-shirt that boasted of what he'd done to 'your daughter'. Being a relatively new dad my first reaction would have been to rip the offending article off him and insert it in him none too graciously.
Not being that way inclined though I just gave my best paddington stare and left it at that.
Then again there are those that step out of a 3 series BMW with a slick suit, rolex, too much jewellery and a halo of aftershave. They reek of self importance and are always calculating what they can get out of you.
Given the choice I think I'd rather share a bag of pork scratchings with wayne and waynetta.

I say this partly because I have been there and experienced both sides, and I can honestly say that I had more pride and satisfaction in the former of the two and would happily do it again if I was able.
