it may be a valid point but this has nothing to do with this thread which is about satellite internet providers....
you can use astra2connect skydsl etc just as you would telefonica, orange, europe etc to conenct to the internet - nothing more - and is ideal for those people who live in the campo and are unable to get a landline or adsl connection.

IMHO Astra2connect is a good service and affordable, It certainly makes up for the inconsistencies in the Spanish Telephone network. I have installed it with ease, Others will be able to if they have a tech savy head on them, failing that have a chat with some GUY and he will help.
Also IMHO give Skydsl a very wide berth, It looks good on paper once you have signed up you will have problems shaking them loose. You have to see out every year your signed up for and give them a hell of a lot of notice for cancellation(If they acknowledge it). I have a couple of friends that have taken them to court and Won(Here in France). Skydsl is German and tries to operate under German Law, But when ever it (Skydsl) takes customers to court that has to be done in the customers territory of residence and billing. I do know of one person in France who was summoned to appear in court in Germany for non payment after trying to cancel the service. Thankfully the German Judge kicked the case out and found SDsl in contempt because the person was not a resident of Germany.

Another provider "Tooway"with distributors in Spain.
Apparently some of the early systems have not been so good for various reasons, one of the main ones being the time delay and slow uplink speed.
They are not recommended for instant response such as gaming, but are said to be ok for surfing and other basic applications.
This company expect to have another satellite in operation next year which is expected to vastly reduce some of the typical problems of two way sat communication such as time-lag.

Thanks for that Ka Ora.
Would appreciate any further info you have regarding whereabouts of distributors, both UK and Spain, rough costs for a basic system and have you had any problems with use for basic applications?
Can PM if preferred.
Many Thanks,..D.D.

I notice that there are three different transponders or beams.
1,...Astra 2connect at 23.5 E. (covers UK,... Not Spain)
2,...W3A-A12.....at 7 E. (covers most Europe incl. both UK and Spain)
3,...W3A-W6......at 7 E. (covers South of Africa)
I presume it best to use my Spanish address to get coverage in UK as well as Spain with option 2,...or.....
Maybe its not an identical system for each location, as they ask you to choose between the three transponders?
Although I've set up various dishes and stuff before, I'm no whizzkid with this stuff, so would I be best getting a sat guy or expert to set it up initially for me in Spain?

I set up and ran a community broadband system using a satellite link. The system is no longer running, but I can fill you in on all the details, and in fact, I still have all the kit including dish, modem and radio gear sat in my house in Valencia!

What exactly do you want it for?

I just need a basic domestic system for surfing the net and sites such as this,
nothing more.
Tried with Rural Internet, but cant get a signal at my Valencia region location.
Just noticed on the Spanish sat-net site that the govt of Navarre has been granted licence and permission to heavily subsidise sat-net systems for remote rural areas and households that are out of reach of all other systems, as they believe people in such areas should have equal rights and opportunities.
Dont know if anything similar applies in other areas.

why not use a usb dongle
simyo 3 gig per month for 25€ and reverts to 256k when used up to allow some access to the net and emails.
masmovil 1 gig per month for 18€ and 3 cents per mb after that.
You could even use it on the move with a laptop or mobile device.
And you can use fring or skype on them if you wish.

The subsidies are supposed to be national, and there are also supposed to be grants available from Town Halls.

Would very much appreciate contact info.if you could PM me some time.
Not too fussed about the grants myself,....maybe not due to them anyway, as I am not permanently resident.

SatSpeed DE offer the same system with better overall pricing at 950€ for install and all equipment inc activation, then 28.90€ per month for 2.0Gb ,
Wifi routers and phones can be added at extra cost including phone with Spanish landline numbers,
If you exceed your monthly download allowance the system will slow down your Download speeds according to the voluem you are over , this works on a rolling 4 week table, and as soon as you are back within allowance the system speeds back up, you never lose connection because of this.
The system is 24/7, with no other charges,
The main difference on the Tooway over Satspeed, is the the volume and cost per month, this over time more than makes up for the higher installation costs of Satspeed.

I think some people here have got themselves confused. "Satellite internet" usually means getting the internet using a satellite feed, rather than a phone line / ADSL feed. A few people might think it refers to receiving satellite TV from someone feeding it to you over the internet. That's the one which is (usually) illegal.
Not worth getting upset over, though.

Exactly, the poster never mentioned SKY TV!!!!

Hi Dick
If you want a good introduction to Satellite Internet look up "Satellite Internet Access" in Wickipedia gives a good description of the various types and there are a number.

In many cases yes, but not all, as itv is a commercial channel no licence is required and as their is so many loop holes in the law, which gives people like zattoo the rights to stream, but we have one to showing all your uk freesat channels plus lots more , without having to have a uk proxy or ip address e-mail me for more infomation if you want just to look and test it.
