Sounds like he could use a pair of noise isolating earphones. I have a pair of these and they are seriously good. A life saver (not my life, but the inconsiderate !**@$s in the next seat ). Since they remove the ambient noise, you can keep the volume of your music down, too. Generally I can't hear anything apart from the MP3. No engine noise, announcements, other people - anything.

Re: RYANAIR TO ALLOW SMOKING ON FLIGHTS
Took a Monarch flight from uk to Malaga at the weekend.
They specifically mentioned that smokeless cigarettes were not allowed on their flights.
If it's not a hazzard, dangerous, or a nuisance to other passengers then how can one airline ban them while another allows them?
On the other hand, Monarch allow mobile phones in flight mode, whereas Ryanair say no mobiles even in flight mode.
When we are talking about items that pose no hazzard or threat then can airlines really dictate what you can and can't do on their flights? I can understand about bringing your own booze on a flight and them insisting that you buy theirs - it allows them control over how drunk you can get, a possible hazzard but we all really know that they just want to fleece you, but it's like saying that you can't bring your own book on board and instead have to buy one of their own publications if you want to read anything (oops, better be careful of putting ideas into Mr. O'leary's head).

Not an issue. The noise isolating works both ways! so almost no sound leaks out - just like no external sounds leak in. Plus, as I mentioned the lower volume reduces the levels as well. You don't annoy the other people around you and you don't go deaf from excessive volume.
Anyway I can stand anything if it is only for two and a bit hours except that person who insists on taking his shoes off and giving you a whiff!
