Hi John, i got your pm........thank you so much.
So can i raise a little point that he mentioned in my private message.

i have heard that to make it in the bar and cafe industry it may be better to go inland a bit. So that you get the tourism and the locals year round. I was thinking benalmadena or fuengirola ( something marina or beachfront ) - is this not the best idea. Or are there little towns off these places that are better to research on....and why ???

Thank you every1 for your help xx

As per PM the place i suggested what is near by and even the place i live what is next store but bars rarely come up for sale where i am and they all do ok as there not reliant on tourists all the time due to the large number of full time residents.

regarding inland bar sales, remember that you may have a local clientelle throughout the year, but no way as much trade in the summer as you would on the coast. most coastal areas have locals all year round, it's just their choice which bar suits them......i've seen it inland of valencia, and if you're paying for a traspaso and a monthly rent, you're gonna need those summer sales........

The only people to make money out of bars are the people that sell the lease to new clients every few months, the people that trade in second hand bar fittings, the council licencing dept and lawyers.

hello.
My husband and i have a bar. we are slightly inland, about 10 miles i guess. In this area there are so many bars on the coast that the competition is so high, as someone else eaid, many go under very quickley. We have a mixture of spanish and english customers, we dont rely soley on the brits.
We had no spanish when we arrived here, looking back we must have been mad!!! please please take lessons before you move, it makes things so much harder without it. My husbands spanish is really good now, mine not so! We got ripped off a few times at the beginning by suppliers etc, who can blame them, they must have seen us coming lol
But it is really hard, we ran bars in the uk, its much more difficult to earn a living here, the red tape is so confusing, then just when you think you are making money something else comes up that you have to pay out for!
Some months we make money, others we dont. On avaerage we manage, the bills are paid and we cover our living expenses, but in the main there isnt much else left over for luxuries. As long as you dont think you are gonna make your fortune here then go for it as long as you visit many times and go into it with your eyes open. Its much more difficult than we expected, but life in general is better for us here than it was in the UK, just watch out for the rentacrowd, we fell for that one!!

Oh and dont forget there is not alot of profit to be made, everything sells so cheaply that you have to sell a hell of a lot to make a profit. And like someone else said, you will be lucky if you get a true record of the accounts here.

I have just received an private message from someone recommending :-

(SNIP)

We would be after a one way drive, and i see that this company does this.

Can you tell me how it works though. We would want to rent a van that is local to us (Lancashire ) so we can load it, then drive it to our closest port/ferry terminal. Once in Spain, how does it work....How do you get the van to your house??

Confused xx
Look for a post by twyntub he used the one way van hire. He will be able to advise you on this, he travelled from Cheshire I think.

Michael & Dawn.

A friend (he has been here over 20 years & helps a lot of expats) of ours here in Torrevieja sats "If you want to loose money, buy a bar" very wise advice.

We have been here over 4 years & nearly all the bars bought by expats have closed & they all lost all their money. Very sad.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

starting to think ......there must be at least a few happy stories of bar owners.

surely some must make money. what would you estimate a typical days takings to be for a cafe bar ( food and drinks ) morning through until late at night.

in the good months (may - sept)??. £.......
and the quieter times ?? £.......

I don't think anyone, except those in the trade, would be able to answer that question .... and please dont take this the wrong way because we all like to help as much as we can, but if you have to ask that question on here then you really need to spend a lot more time researching this. A good business plan (as I'm sure you already know being in the business) will have a good idea of what your turnover against costs will need to be throughout the first two or three years ...... The only way you can tell this I guess is by what the sellers of these businesses tell you ..... and that probably isn't a good place to start.

You cant judge from that, every bar is different, you might be taking masses of money but also be paying out loads as well. Depends how much you pay for stock, in the summer its not unheard of for us to get a 800 or more euro electric bill! plus rent, stock, taxes, social security, repairs and upkeep plus other things. we make enough money to get by, all the bills get paid, but not enough to save anything or go on holiday. Someone mentioned everyone is for sale, i think thats true, we do ok, but we'd still sell for the right price, we'd earn more if hubby had a job rather than our own business but then jobs are not always easy to come by.

You seriously need to get your figures adjusted.
Food shopping 50 €`s , for 35 customers ??
Stock.... 200 euros a month, how much profit are you going to make on that ?
Multiply your health costs by 10 at least.
Car rental times 4.
You won`t get commercial phone/tv/internet connection for 60 €`s, and will need licences for every tv you have in there.

... for a start, I think the cost of National Insurance (health cover) here is about 250 euro/month each! I'm not sure there's any way to avoid it either.
