has anyone tried explaining to the fish where the lines, disputed or otherwise, are actually drawn in the ocean ?

I am confident there will be a fish eye stare

This is all very confusing isn't it?

If it's not Gibraltarian, is on the high seas and is fishing illegally then surely it is quite right that it was apprehended. Wouldn't the Royal Navy have done more or less the same in the Irish Sea or North Sea?

BTW Where was the boat registered if not Gibraltar and presumably not Spain?

The boat pictured is Spanish.

The law with reference to Bluefin tuna is not in place yet so it was not fishing illegally

just what would happen if we told all Spaniards they couldn't fly direct from Spain to UK but had to go via another country first ?

The law regarding bluefin tuna is that you need a licence to fish it (it is worth a fortune) and the boat didn't appear to have one.

I don't know but I would guess pre 1969.
I was aware that Military flights could not overfly Spain when heading for Gib, they have to go out over the Atlantic and around Portugal.
Also until recently civilian flights could not go direct from Gib to or from Spain, Tangiers was popular, I sat on the runway there for a few hours waiting whilst they dragged a Nimrod off the runway at Gib when it burst all it's tyres on landing.
Even pleasure boats at one time could not go from Gib to the province of Cadiz.

Back in 1986 when the Yanks bombed Gadaffi with F111 from UK they had to fly a round Spain, although I believe one did land at Rota on the return due to damage.

Sorry. The one that was chased by the Guardia Civil into Gib harbour. If they had had a licence presumably they could have just shown it to the GC and it wouldn't have been an issue.

Hi Pocaloca can you point me to a link please ? So far all I have found is that the laws are proposals and not yet fully signed.

With reference to the photo you posted Gib does not have any commercial fishing boats, I am trying to establish what the boat actually was.

The photo I believe shows a Spanish boat off the mouth of the Gadarranque river with the Gibraltar Oil Refinery in the background, but this is much of a guess due to the lack of detail.

The boat that was chased into the Gib harbour was not fishing, it was a pleasure boat that had been to Campamento to join in the feast of the 'Virgen del Carmen'.

Oh, am I mixing up two different events then? Sorry! No wonder people are confused!
