But because so many took advantage of it, it pissed off the politically-influential energy companies, who are now hell-bent on taxing the daylights out of self-generated energy to pay off the debt owed to them for the subsidies that the government couldn't afford so that we could all enjoy lower energy costs, which turned out to be amongst the world's most expensive whilst the energy companies enjoy 10-digit profits.
Does that help?

Because the government originally provided generous subsidies for installing solar. Unfortunately, those who had space for it live in the campo.

Here's my view of longevity. It comes from a deeply personal current experience that I swear to you is the absolute truth, and is extremely saddening.
My mother is 98 years old. She is physically unable to care for herself, yet has the mental capacity of a 40 year old.
My father died nearly 30 years ago. They truly loved each other and were partners for life. Since my father's death, it has been as though half of her is dead. She feels incomplete and has nothing to look forward to. Now, she requires a team if people to watch over her and take care of her 24x7 She's not ill, she's simply old. She resides in a £3000 per month care home, which is far from posh. She has no pride or dignity. She is seriously depressed and only wants to die. Her life savings is being used to support her, along with my own contributions.
But no, she can't die. There is a team of doctors, psychologists, and various medical professionals who ensure she retains her health as long as possible, completely against her will, and at massive cost to taxpayers, which she also feels extremely guilty about.
I don't smoke and don't drink much, but considering that I really don't want to end up like my mother, I sometimes wonder if I should.

I believe it's a cruelty inflicted by the Churches and their ancient beliefs which are well out of date and will lead to their demise unless they drastically change their teaching.

Strange you should say that because I've just watched a news report on Spanish 24 HR TV regarding a FIVE FOLD INCREASE in URGENT CASES of ALCOHOL ABUSE by SPANISH YOUNGSTERS.

One campaign in Spain is so concerned about the rising levels of alcohol consumption that they coined the phrase, “Cada vez que te emborrachas te vuelves un poco más tonto” (“Every time you get drunk you become a little sillier”) Spain is several years behind in many aspects but it is showing signs of playing catch up where alcohol abuse is concerned and will be up to UK levels in no time. They seem to lead the EU when it comes to drug abuse, especially cocaine, I read that 40% of road deaths were either drunk and/or had taken drugs. It's a bit like the much lauded med diet, thing of the past for most youngsters, Spain has some of the most obese kids in Europe.

Certainly last time in our Spanish holiday hotel we were amazed at how the young Spaniards had developed a liking to the 'Full English' breakfasts. Several youngsters made several return trips to the food counter
