If he was in the torre area, then all the car boot sales on the Orihuela Costa have been closed down by the authorities, this could well have been one of his prime selling areas, and many people relying on those outlets finished up seling surplus goods at local auctions. Don't forget though that car booters have very little in the way of overheads, what the OP is talking about is opening shops, or even a chain of shops, so the cost of the overheads, and licences have to be factored in.

I can speak from experience, after spending 2 years working local markets/car boot sales in the Torrevieja area.
I found, baked beans, spaghetti, beans and sausage were always popular.
Brand names are not always the best value, we sold more Tesco value and then Bookers own brand beans than any other.
Dried product such as; dumpling mix, batter mix and suffing excellent sellers.
Where are you planning on basing your business as this may be a factor of what you sell more of.
Jelly and instant whip great for families with children, rice pudding and ready brek style cereal for the older population.
Drop me a line on my email:

I would be more than happy to bounce ideas around with you, as I say I have got a lot of experience of food retail.
We ran a standard 200 lines across tinned and dried products with seasonal extras (Easter Eggs, Mince pies, Christmas cakes etc.).
Good luck with the venture.

Mate, how did you get into the bootsale's ?, did you make a decent living until you stopped ?

Reason for asking is that I was asking about bootsales for pet supplies.
After asking, decided to go down the E Bay route in the UK prior to coming out to Spain, so something would be up and running when we land, but would still like to get out and about, and meet some people when in Spain.:)

As JDR says, I have no objection to email addy's, but I know personally what this can do when the bots farm it and spam you to death.

Hi Dave,

One major set back - they closed a shop here because the ingredient list was in English not in Spanish - the fines were horrendous. We can also get to Gibraltar in an hour or so.

We also have a primark in Jerez. And that may bring a point, are you sure some sort of "Tesco's" is not going to open up in Spain - But you are right to research and get opinions so well done for that - have a BIG brownie point.

Sorry if I rained on your parade

Most boot sales don`t allow food or new stuff to be sold, and those that did have been shut down as they need a proper market licence for selling anything that is not second hand.

Yes there is a Primark in the big shopping centre next to Murcia Football Stadium. This is the nearest one to us which is about an hours drive. Haven't been the the UK lately so don't know whats in the UK stores but I know the one in Murcia looks like a jumble sale, clothes in heaps, unable to find smaller sizes, alot of the clothes look dated, possibly what might have been in fashion a couple of years ago, and really not that cheap anymore.

Most of the shops selling UK stuff have to have special labels on them as you say in Spanish.

We were in the Torrevieja area and the car boot sales were closed down, we approached the town hall for a pitch on the local market but the waiting list was horrendously long.
We labelled everything in spanish, so no problem there.
Spam, never a good seller....corned beef much more popular. :p
Pet food on the car boots was always popular but the new rules of no new products stopped all that.

here too

I can actually buy some things in Iceland cheaper than in Mercadona

I was in there this afternoon for icecream (much cheaper than Mercadona) & spotted some fresh baking spuds which were less per kilo, and tubs of coleslaw for about a third of the price!

dh & dd say they prefer it too!

Thanks for all the response, this is definitely helpful. As a start i feel operating on market would make sense, theres less to lose if it doesn't take off. Is the situation with no new products on car boots true throughout Spain, or is this certain areas?
And as far as labelling everything in Spanish, is this just for the ingredients or other information aswell?

yes there are Primarks in Spain - I have no idea if they are the same as in the UK as I never went to one there

I have been to the one in Murcia - really cheap clothes - quality what you'd expect - which is no problem with growing kids - and absolutely heaving with Spanish women!

No new stuff on all the ones I know.
Most of the proper markets around here are on a rota system so all the residents can get a pitch at some time of the month.
You will need some excellent Spanish and probably a residencia certificate when trying to book a place.

That's my major flaw, i know absolutely no Spainish at all, although i suppose once there the learning curve is highly increased.

You know no Spanish?
You know little about the business situation there?

I am sorry to be harsh but

Good luck, I truly mean that, you are going to need it.

Now go do some real research, visit the area, learn the language - & then come back with your question, you are wasting your time.

Knowing Spainish isn't highly needed when the majority of business is going to be with english customers, but where it is needed, a friends with good Spainish would be a help. Gaining opinions and information is not wasting time. The majority of my research is not infact within the area, but here in the UK, finding suppliers. It is clear there will be demand for goods throughout Spain, however the goods may differ. Once i have found good methods of supply and import, i would then look into sales areas in more depth. I am mainly checking that people would actually want the goods, and if i'd be able to compete with the current competition in Spain
