That depends totally on which part of Spain you live in. Away from the coast in Andalucia the summers are too hot to be outside; except in the early morning and late afternoon/evening (Death Valley style: 40++ the rest of the day) and the winters too cold - down to -10 some days. It also chucks it down on occasion. On top of that, THE FLIES . From about May through to October expect to be eaten alive by mozzies, "buzzed" incessantly by bluebottles and have to duck, every time one of the giant flying beetles shoots past.

Firstly we are responsable, we have done it many times and know where to go, and what to do and what precautions to take. We are not tourists. One of my friends also happens to be a policeman, which is why the ranger turned a blind eye. You probably read in the news that el Puerto de Santa Maria didn´t burn to the ground. What a plank  Nobody turns a blind eye to that kind of irresponsible behaviour nor gives favours to people who have a policemen for a friend:rofl: IMO yet another fairy story. |

I totally agree. We are unable to eat outside due to the dive bombing flies that haunt our every second, even within the safety of a gazebo with fly screens they manage to find us. The onslaught of wasps this year has caused difficulty around the pools. The summer in Andalucia is far too hot to spend any time outside unless you rise with the dawn, particularly this year which has been {we are told by locals} hotter than normal, hence in the village very few people can be seen during the day time. Mozzie dinner time in the evenings stops you venturing out unless armed with a chemical concoction worthy of warfare. So in answer to the question... no, we have spent more time in the confines of the home than we did in the UK. We shall however be venturing out more after the heat of summer dies down though shall have to avoid dog walking in the campo when our nasty caterpillar friends show their hairy little faces.

Have a look at this article. It is quite a serious matter, for animals especially.

Stupid irresponsable people start fires. I mentioned that we are not tourists to highlight the fact that we know what to do, where to go etc etc |

Your are the prat, telling me that I am selfish and irresponsible. Who do you think you are, self-rightous muppet. You jumped to conclusions without knowing where we set up, or how we did it. I won´t explain how we do it because it might go over your head. You also have no idea how Spain works then if you think people don´t do favours for each other, especially in smaller towns. I was brought up in Spain so don´t try to tell me how the country operates. Try getting away from your English ghetto. |

Yes, I was warned about them almost as soon as I moved here 5 years ago as I have 3 dogs. The neighbour who told me about them had a dog who died a painful death as it had licked or sniffed out one of these caterpillars while out walking. Its almost like the effect of acid where its mouth, throat and stomach were burned and despite expensive veterinary treatment it did not survive. Also the lady had acid like burns on her arms from the saliva of the dog.

This summer we put up a couple of traps (similar to wasp traps) with pheromones that attract the male butterflies. A large number were drowned, so we hope that fewer female butterflies will be laying fewer eggs, leading to fewer caterpillars next year.... We bought these traps from a company in Lyon via Internet - there's sure to be a similar company in Spain. If you've got nests in your garden, you can cut the branches off in the winter and burn them (take care to wear gloves, otherwise you'll get itchy spots). Not much you can do about the caterpillars once they start processing, except stamp on them all! Unfortunately, dogs don't realize the danger of touching them. Our neighbour's dog tried to eat one last year and half his tongue was burnt off.:( |
