I got my NIE about a year ago, along with a certificate valid for 3 months. I have used the certificate a couple of times after it's 3 month validity had expired, but it didn't seem to matter. Once was to get my digital certificate at Hacienda.

So you may never need to get a new certificate. As Fred says, the number itself does not expire.

Sorry but this doesn't make any sense to me.

When you got your SS number, you will have had to give your NIE - so they are already linked.

Your passport doesn't really come into the equation.

No they ask if you want to link it with your passport number or your nie number

NIE's are normally linked to passport numbers when you apply for them - presumably that's why they gave the option.

There is always a problem linking to a passport number because when you renew your passport, you get a new number - that confuses the hell out of the Spanish system if they do any cross checks in the future.

I'll second Fred's comment early on we had linked something to the passport and just recently had some official business to do and produced our new passport to the bemusement of the official since the number was not correct so we went home to collector old passport with the corner cut off. They accepted that and disregarded the new one (much to complicated). In Spain your NIE IS FOR LIFE AND A SPANISH PASSPORT NUMBER NEVER CHANGES so why should it not be the same everywhere is their attitude. That makes a lot of sense!

Yes I understand that part however! My employer in Barcelona have stated that to be payed and taxed my ss number must be linked to my nie number rather than my British passport number so the question I am asking is there possibility of doing the change online? Rather than going to the social?

I doubt that it is possible and if it was it would require you to have a digital certificate, which, if you haven't already got one, will take much more effort to get than going to the INSS office.

I got a job offered and came to Spain went with my employer to the local Federal police station had to have a copy of the indefino contract passport etc and it was done there and then and there had to be a payment of about 10 euros into a certain bank account. We then went to the social and got registered there and am now waiting for my health card to show up. I did not have to supply a bank account because I guess because of my work contract, hope this helps
