Jenna's comment made me think about the "machismo way of life" of, oooh, say 30 years ago... Anybody remember when it was frowned upon for a woman to enter a pub? (not the lounge)
Poollounger, I agree, if not a car, then a moped for sure. Easier to park, but a nightmare for the hairstyle!
As for taking the bus, go for it! You might even strike up a conversation with an exiled Russian novelist! (another story...LOL)

Absolutely. I still don´t like going into any public area like a pub on my own. My mother also always stressed that you don´t smoke in the street as "it´s common". Mind you she once called me a "fishwife" for shouting at somebody. It´s funny how things stick in your mind from being young. My daughter only reminded me the other day of the time when she was the Virgin Mary in the primary school nativity and all she could remember of it was me arguing with the teacher about having to make an outfit for her. I was never a good mother as I couldn´t sew at all. She said it was very traumatic for her. Well perhaps not very!! I don´t think it has scarred her for life.

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel much more nervous as a passenger in Spain than I ever have as a driver!

Mind you, when I get back to the UK after a stay in Spain, I sometimes forget which side of the road I should be on!

My kids don't find it funny being my passenger then :scared: - ah they've no spirit of adventure - as I tell them "who needs roller coasters?"

When you go into site, click see all routes button.
You get listing of all services.
Click on the Cadiz-Algeciras-LaLinea service and you will get the full timetable - Cadiz is listed and you see the bus number at the bottom of the timetable.

Maybe because I am always the passenger that's the reason why I am so nervous when we go in to town, it must be because as a passenger you have more time on your hand and hence time to study what is going on around you. When we were back in Blighty in November I kept having to stop my self from saying to OH that we were on the wrong side of the road. My get kids were never very good passengers when I was driving they always had something to say, they should talk the last time I was with my youngest daughter I had to ask her to slow down and hold the steering wheel instead of just balancing her hand on it as we went round a roundabout. Kids such is life!!!!!!:scared:

I have been thinking about this comment all morning. If there are any Wendy's out there reading this please I apologise up front for any upset that may be caused by my sweeping statement of the name Wendy, it was all said "in the best possible taste".

Although I do drive around Chiclana and the surrounding area, I so totally agree with this thread about independence.
We've both retired early and although myhusband is getting a pension I don't get mine for another 10 years! When you've worked all your life it is very hard to suddenly have nothing in your own right.
Don't get me wrong my husband is great and if there's ever anything I want then as long as we can afford it there's no problem.
I talked about this to some friends in the UK just before Christmas and I think it's a woman thing as my husband got quite upset when we talked about it but my female friends completely understood.

As for the buses Glynis go for it.
I've caught the bus a few times into Cadiz because it's so much easier it takes about half an hour. You can also get the bus to the big market in San Fernando on a Thursday.

Ladies
I can't believe you're falling for all these manly ploys to allow us to get our own way - I'll explain.

Likely response to the statement, "I'm just nipping out in the car love, be back in an hour":-

Hound dog look(1) = What? I'll have to make my own lunch!!

Hound dog look (2) = Damn, she's coming back!!

No, I'll take you, and pick you up later (1) = Excellent, but I don't want her catching me on the porn sites if she comes back early.

No, I'll take you, and pick you up later (2) = Excellent, but I don't want her catching me at Juanita's house if she comes back early.

No, I'll take you, and pick you up later (3) = She's not bloody driving my car, if she bumps it I'd be lost without it round here.

I'll come too (1) = She's not bloody driving my car, if she bumps it I'd be lost without it round here, and I'll be able to keep my eye on how much she's spending.

I'll come too (2) = I need to go to the bank.

Sorry gents for giving the game away.

I fully understand what you are saying about pensions, we have the same circumstance in our house, back in England I earned the greater wage and it never caused a problem as we just never think about where the money comes from but lately I have thought a little about it as I was so used to just spending when I wanted to but now we have to decided together if what and how we spend. It is not a problem for us, as it is not for you because both myself and the other half are so well match and in tune with each but he too can not really understand the indepence thing as he says it is not a problem because he has never asked me not to do, go or spend whenever I have wanted to. So whats the problem -? I don't know as the saying goes Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus.

I am well impressed by anyone who gets a bus on the own into Cadiz, well impressed.........

Hi crispygirl,

Kath and I have always made our way jointly for the last 45 yrs.

Kath makes all the BIG decisions and I am allowed to decide what are the big decisions.

Seems to have worked well for us up until now!

John.

At least in Spain you don't have hundreds of learners being taught by their dads of anyone else who has a licence, has to be a driving school in a properly marked car.

When we were back in the UK in December, we were driven around by various relatives, and yes, I did get worried that they were driving on the wrong side of the road several times.:scared: :scared:

Well having followed numerous people being instructed by these so called professionals and seen the following entering roundabout to turn left with no indicators and on the outside lane, going over the speed limit, driving to close to the car in front, not indicating and turning left/right etc etc. I have no comment. There is even a driving school near the bridge in Chiclana that parks its cars on the pavement and thats a sore point with me at the moment.
