Lushdaddy, the trick is to keep the juice in the meat. The perception is that the British overcook it, then throw the juice away, then add sauces such as bisto or cheese sauce etc that means it doesnt matter what quality of meat you buy.

There is one story that someone was invited to Sunday dinner where there was a fantastic joint of roast beef. The Spanish girl was looking forward so much to it as it looked and smelt so good. The British host took out the meat from the oven to show everyone then proceeded to throw the natural jiuces i.e. gravy down the sink! And instead covered this lovely meat with powdered bisto granuals.

The Spanish girl said she felt like crying

Spanish meat is very good. As long as you dont go to Mercadona or Iceland. Try Asturian or Galician beef or lamb from Segovia. Again, you get what you pay for.

The next story you may think is racist, but sums up what many Spanish people think about Britain and food. I went to the butchers in Asturias to get some beef with my FIL because my family were coming to dinner. The butcher was recommending an expensive local cut from a particular breed that they dont have in very often. Then my FIL said it was for some English guests who were coming for dinner and the butcher then said "Buy the cheap cut then, they wont be able to tell the diffference"!

You racist you.
I understand. Every bit of meat that I buy over here ends up tasting really nice. I think it is to do with the cook rather than the country it comes from.
You could give me the most expensive cut of meat off the most expensive cow in the world and I'll make you a nice meal. Give Gordon Ramsey a gypsies cat and he'll make it taste like heaven in your mouth.

As for you, naughty madrid boy..
Do you think Spanish beef is the worse you've ever come across?

You mean just chop its horns off and wipe its ass?
You can argue till the cows come home which breed is best.
Highlands, for instance have a lot going for them, except they are a regarded as a luxury product and very pricey, partly because of their slow growth rate.
Best thing is go out in the field and choose your own beef on the hoof.
Next make sure it is well hung,(no I dont mean those 2 round things, though they are very tasty),that can be arranged if you are on good terms with a local butcher.
With most of the stuff in a typical supermarket, this is often not the case.
To go back to Madrid boys post I know a couple of guys back my way who think nothing of walking down the street eating raw sirloin steaks after visiting the local butcher,..thats how good it can be if the job is done right.

And cricket man.. Why can't I pm you? I tried but it won't let me.

I do like the Argentinian steakhouses. They seem to be one of the most popular for steaks. Love it.. They cook them just right too. Someone is bound to say that the steaks they have in these restaurants aren't Argentinian. It tastes really good nice and rare.

Where do you get these stories from?...living in the ex-pat ghetto of Benalmadeeena:rofl: We are all ex-pats on here does anyone know of people serving steak with Bisto cos I honestly don't. Generally people who do daft things like that don't generally buy steak, they go for ready made in Iceland! Who does cheese sauce with steak...probably you. What would a butcher in Asturias know of Brit cooking he was probably taking a dig at you:rofl:

So what? Let his posts be his judge. For the most part people on here can make their own mind up, they can make their own decisions about people and their posts, just let it lie, let the people make their own minds up.... it makes for a much happier board you know?

I've heard a lot of people say this as well, may have a look for one next week if they're not closed for the fiestas.

I have had a blue cheese sauce with steak. It had prawns on top too.. Surf n turf blue cheese seaside sauce it was called.. Well tasty.. The prawns were massive things too.. Fresh from the sea.. The steak I don't know but it tasted mighty fine and was huge:thumbsup:.. So you can have a cheese sauce with steak.

and Jackytoo, why is your post inside where you have quoted cricketman?
Or have I read that wrong.

I don't know what happened...gremlins:rofl: make of it what you will.

My favourite sauce with steak is green pepper sauce but black pepper is fine too. Another is to just put some creme fraiche in the juices and stir. mushroom sauce is good too.

They are the dogs, absoloutely fantastic.. You're bound to be dribbling the minute they put the meat in front of you. It's that good..:)
They aren't the cheapest but I think for only a little less money you can be given absoloute cr@p, so it's worth the extra couple of euros..

@Jackytoo.. Ah, thought it may be. Couldn't understand it.:)

I don't understand this obsession with so many elaborate sauces.
The basis of good food is top quality, fresh ingredients, cooked,( but not overcooked), in such a way as to be able to enjoy the full flavour of top quality produce at its very best.
While a little sauce here and there may be ok,... it is only with sub-standard produce that there is need for large quantities of the stuff,...as in Indian restaurants where the food is no doubt quite tasty, because of the expensive sauce, but the basic ingredients are generally cr@p and would be almost inedible on their own.

That cheese thing was nice with surf and turf, it was more just blue cheese melting maybe (it was quite thick) but it was LUSH..
Ask the chefs.. They're the ones who invent the stupid things, well, tasty stupid things. As a matter of fact it must be the French. Somebody has already said that they are the biggest sauce users, steak with snail sauce and all that. Urgh.. Simply vile..
I love steaks without a sauce. The blood is sauce enough.
I am afraid that I am no Ainsley Harriot though so I would only be able to tell you if it is nice to eat. Not if it was sub standard. What is substandard though? I wouldn't have a clue myself.
Also...
What would you consider the best sauce to accompany a nice steak then?:)
