There is no difference when you use a stand off, whether your ladder is up there for a second or an hour it's just as easy to erect with or without a stand off.

In English that's when you say "Swimming is good for you."

Spanish can only say 'To swim is good for you' = Nadar es buen, never nandando
are you saying they are foreigners - in their own country ??
or as in many languages they say things the right way round and we are wrong ??

now if you were to consider that "c" is pronounced as "th" because of placating a king several hundred years ago ..... ......

Not quite sure what you mean?

I'm simply saying that while there are gerunds in English, there are no gerunds in Spanish.

A gerundio is not a gerund.

there was me thinking we would gerund to it in time and that a gerundio was the way we would do it

They look to me more like compound nouns where two nouns combine to form one in which case they are more like gerunds. Oh well, what do I know?

I'm with you. They look like adjectives or compound nouns. Flying fish, man eating shark, a basking shark....

I think a swimming pool where the swimming bit is a present participle would mean that the pool is actually swimming.

I'm not surprised the thread has gone ever so ever so quiet

I for one never understood these things when I was at school but I managed to live my life without worrying about them and have no intention worrying about them now

I am intrigued as this type of item seems to lead to a safer use of a ladder and when back in Spain will be doing my own search for said item

They are compound nouns using gerunds, like walking stick, hiking boots, in this case it forms the adjective of the noun

I was looking at one on Saturday in Makro. They sell the Youngman range of ladders and this was an aluminimum ladder standoff very well designed with rubber feet to stand on the wall, about £25. Key here is light weight you can imagine a heavy ladder with a heavy stand off at the top trying to get that into position on the wall would be 3 man job. With a Youngman 3 stage ladder and a youngman standoff I can do it alone. A futher accidental advantage is that the space at the top just fits an aluminimum food tray such as you get with a pre prepared chicken at M & S that then provides a tray for bits and peices even a 5 litre paint can. Job done.
