Increased taxes
#16
Are you sure that it is now based on emissions? I know that the registration tax now is but I thought that the local tax was still based on "fiscal horsepower".
Incidentally, when I moved 15km the tax increased threefold - I now pay €140 for a 1.9l diesel.
That's more than it would cost in the UK.

I only ask because I have a diesel on order, when I've only had petrol previously in Spain.
I'm trying to work out if the diesel vehicle tax is much more expensive than for an equivalent sized petrol.

Just in passing. I was wondering how, if you are not the registered owner, you can insure it, ITV etc. Also when a person is driving a vehicle not registered to them they need an authorisation letter from the owner.

So did it increase threefold on the same vehicle or did you not have a 1.9 diesel previously ?

I am not aware that the fuel makes any difference.
It used to affect registration tax before they changed it to emissions based.
It is based on "fiscal horsepower" which is an old fashioned measurement.

No, it was a straight change of address.

The fiscal HP is based on engine sizes (bore, stroke, number of cylinders etc) - not engine capacity or fuel.
It's almost the same as the old UK measurement of horsepower.

Surely the sum of bore, stroke and cylinders is the same as engine capacity as measured in ccs.

Oooooh, this is getting far too interesting. Please can we resume the usual taunts, threats and insults about illegal Brit cars in Spain.
It's soooooo entertaining!

There is a big difference between long stroke and short stroke engines of the same capacity.
Anyway, this is verging off topic and as the maths are beyond most people so let's keep the posts to the subject of tax increases.

No it's not. Check the formula and you will see that it is not the same as basic cubic capacity.

and appears to be relevant in calculating the tax ?

Leaving the maths aside, in our town the taxes are in bands.
To maximise the tax they get, the increases between bands are disproportionate.
The worst band, not surprisingly, is the 12 to 16 band which includes most family cars. Both our cars are in that band - both around 2 litres.
De menos de 8 caballos fiscales 23,86.-€
De 8 hasta 11,99 caballos fiscales 66,50.-€
De 12 hasta 15,99 caballos fiscales 142,87.-€
De 16 hasta 19,99 caballos fiscales 167,97.-€
We had a small increase this year but as you can see from the figures, our rates are considerably higher than most towns.

Thanks for that Fred.
So if you move from 11.99 hosses up to 12 the tax more than doubles.
Phew !
Whilst the prices obviously vary between districts, I wonder if they use the same ratio increases between power bands to calculate prices in all areas.
For instance more than double it for a marginal increase as above.

I had a quick look at a couple of other municipalities and the bands are the same. However, even though the amounts obviously vary, there is no correlation between the bands.
For example, In Almunecar the 12-16 band is €143 and in Malaga it is €134 but the next band, 16-20 is the same in both places - €167

Hopefully they will change over to an emissions based system soon.

Engine capaicty is not connected to horse power or torque .
