There are one or two Spanish TV channels with children's cartoons and the language can be changed to English. Pepa Pig is on at the moment.

The dongle is connected to a wifi router, and just to be sure I hard wire my PC with an ethernet cable to the router. Though it works fine on wifi as well, just being 'anal'. It sends out wifi at the same time so my OH can use her ipad etc.

Its not perfect, its not HD... but I am happy with the setup, and have recommended it several times on the various threads.

Note we connect to Belgian TV with the Slingbox, but you will be fine with UKTV, as there is bound to be a remote that matches your box. We had to build my remote with tech support... but now everyone with my box in Belgium has the same control.

I think the Slingbox is a REALLY neat gadget.... and my on-screen remote is a photograph of my actual one and I just press the buttons with the mouse, and have 100% of the features I would have running the box at home with a physical remote.

One tip. I put the sling on a timer and sometime at around 5am- whatever suits you when you are asleep... it switches off for 15 mins. When it powers back up everything is reset. Just in case there is a glitch and you cant send someone in to reset it when you are away.

Very neat bit of kit.... and the software is on the box... meaning I can borrow a friends PC (if ever needed) and log in and see TV/recordings etc on their PC with no software needed locally on the PC. Great!

Jon
Very encouraging. Slingbox is my first choice as I hunt for a solution for TV in Ayamonte this summer. Pleased to hear it all works.

Thank you nothing like a bit of team work to keep the kids quiet!

I signed up to smartydns for a year I had a discount and it's was £17 for the year. Went into my router and changed DNS settings and bingo every device now gets access to all uk and us sites eg Iplayer, Netflix.

Only problem is that when the wifi box is switched off you can to log in and it updates up address. Very simple to do though. They give you a unique URL you save and when you access it your get a log in box, when you've input name and password it's back on again. All devices connected to router get the unblocked uk websites. Ideal then to attach to a tv via html when I upgrade my tv. Happy with ipad at mo.

If you decide to buy a smart tv [you will see that they are only 80 or so euros more than a non smart one and you may be tempted] I found out just by good fortune that you should buy Samsung in Spain and change the apps to English. If you buy in UK the apps are locked and won't work outside UK. Don't get LG if you want to change apps. It isn't possible.

Samsung UE32F4500A is the number I can find on the receipt it is the entry level one and was 379euros at Carrefour in February. It could be less now. My hubby says they go in series numbers up to 8000 series.

You can get the POP, Tiny POP and POP girl channels in CE. They are numbers 616, 617 and 626 if viewing through a sky box my 5 year old likes them, fine for cartoons etc. We also could receive a channel called Kix (627) which had power Rangers on it.

After that its easy.
  1. Connect (hardwire) your slingbox to your router so its on the net.
  2. Plug in the power cable.
  3. Connect the slingbox to a spare port on the back on your box. This is the video/audio signal. I am guessing that your box connects to your TV by HDMI... but you will have other outputs. (My slingbox is permanently wired to the set-top box and when back I disconnect the net/power supply and it hides behind the set-top box.

Thats it!

When away log into Slingbox web site, and start watching your TV from home in the UK.

I connect my PC to the TV with HDMI in Spain so I have the full screen. I bought a Teknet mouse from Amazon for less than a tenner, that works wirelessly from far away, so I can couch potato and do all the channel searching, recording etc etc. without getting out of my pit! So it is like a remote in its own right. You just call up a photo of your remote at home on the PC screen, and click on the buttons with the mouse, as you would from home.

I hope this makes sense. If you want to watch a lot of TV you will need a good fastish internet in Spain and able to download a lot. You also need a good UPLOAD speed in the UK... but so far everyone seems to have the speed needed.

Good luck
Jon

PS just thought when you select stuff from Spain, then your settop box is taking commands... so if someone else is in the UK house, they will watch what you watch (and vice versa).. so better to have an empty home - or a spare box!
Just a quick update, I am away from Belgium, and have the slingbox connected. I did a test vs filmon and though filmon was acceptable.... And FREE... The slingbox gave a slightly better image. The key is having a good UPLOAD speed at the slingbox location

Today I bought a nifty gadget: I will use it for my slingbox.... but there are MANY other uses for this thing.

http://www.wifiplug.co.uk/

Its a plug that you can switch on/off from anywhere in the world, via your smartphone, tablet, PC etc. All sorts of programmable timing options etc

(Note on the buy now page they also have a wireless / wifi nifty video camera for 60quid, so you can monitor your home).

I have mentioned here a tip when using a slingbox is to put it on a timer so sometime when you are not there or asleep it switches on/off resetting everything.

Its quite a 'hard reset' to do every day. So I thought I'd buy this and reset only when there is a problem. I was away once for 6 weeks and had to ask a friend, who has a key, to come and reset the box, so came up with the timer idea to save hassle and also any wait.

No commercial interest in this co.... but will keep an eye on them as they have some nice looking products

Jon

I do not need CBBC but this seems to be the thread closest to what I want to ask.

I have wifi network with smart TV and PC, laptop etc. I want English TV content and have looked at Cactus VPN and DNS service for UK and US (and other European content) TV. See here: https://www.cactusvpn.com/pricing/

It all looks fine and dandy BUT if I change settings for my router is there a potential downside?

Thanks for any assistance with this.

Plus don't really want hdmi connection to laptop, sort of defeats the whole wifi thing.

Oh, and I thought as this thread is a few months old the information may have changed or new solutions been found. I searched "another internet thread" or whatever it's called and there were no results for "dns".

I personally like the laptop/HDMI route. I use a wireless mouse and can control it from afar (eg the sofa). My PC is always with me and its no bother less than 10 secs, to plug it in either with a separate HDMI or I just take it out of the DVD player. I also use a slingbox to get 100% of the TV and recordings from my 'home base'.. and I can get UKTV with filmon. Ive also had mixed experiences with (so called) 'smart' TV. I personally don't need to be say watching TV and doing email at the same time. Especially as now we have an ipad and a smartphone.

Funnily enough with the stuff Ive loaded on the PC, I now have more TV than I had before the satellite went down.... all this needs a good internet connection of course, and we have it with Priinet, as discussed on the other thread. Thank goodness that came along at around the same time we lost sattelite services via freesat...

Of course you prefer a different route and I hope you will get some sage advice on that....

Good luck
Jon

PS for iplayer, Pandora etc, take a look at hidemyass.com for a worldwide secure VPN connection... good dollar price IMO for all this.

We use Smart dns Proxy, started by using their free 2 week trial and compared to the VPN we had in place noticed a big improvement. Very rarely have to use our HDMI.
Free trial still on offer, might be worth a try.

HI Derek. That's really interesting thanks. Thanks also to Luzliver for bringing it up. Perfect timing for me, I was looking at VPN and hidemyass before - but (luckily?) havent signed up yet

Can anyone advise me on these things please:-

I dont really understand the techie stuff. But what got me interested was the price for 2 years - pretty amazing.. and all the stuff (like e.g syfy HD - that you can stream from the US + iplayer and the French channels etc). https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/PreSignUp
Services | Smart DNS Proxy

It even looks easy to set up as well, for me even!

Since I only have my PC, (and no smart TV) I am guessing that I would stlll have to connect via HDMI which is fine and even preffered by me. Is that right please?

Ive checked the site and it says it is secure, do you know if dns ADDS security, please? If I understand it correctly VPN is a 'layer' that gives additional protection as the sites you connect to see you coming from the VPN site (and not your home location) and so you are more 'anonymous'. Do you you know if this is the same for dns please?

Do you use dns for anything else than TV - so you just leave it on all the time even if not watching TV, please?

Blimey with all this TV I will be a blubbering couch potato.. if I make this next step I will have more TV than I have ever had before by a factor of maybe even 10-20! Amazing what all this new technology is doing.

Fortunately there is so much to do in CE and environs - we can switch off the telly (gladly) but great to have the option... with Priinet or another internet connection Sat TV going is not a problem at all, in fact its opened the door to so much more (for me) - as I didnt know all this stuff before.

Thanks
Jon

Jon,
We are hopeless at all the technical stuff, thats why we picked Proxy, step by step instructions for setting up whether it be router,tv or lap top, we are still on Iberbanda so I think you would get an even better result with Prinet which we will probably change to in the future. We have got it on lap top and smart tv and leave it on all the time.

Derek
