There are loads of companies trying to cash in on the situation offering essentially the same solution. Many of them are offering it free to get you to sign up for their ADSL service.

There is no way I am going to pay them for something you can get for free!

I dont get a good filmon it keeps freezing and i dont have an uk ip address for the iplayers.. €1 a day wont do me any harm .I used to smoke more than that..

Use Expatshield for iPlayer.

If Filmon keeps freezing your connection is too slow and you will have the same problem with the expensive option. You can only get so much data down a copper cable and if its too slow no other solution will work properly.

They will take your €30 and it's not their problem if it freezes.

Sorry my mistake - confusing you with another poster:ohmy:

I will have the same problem but I do have an unlimited ADSL connection:thumbup:

I also have 3tb of previously recorded unwatched programs from my Humax to get me through the cold winter nights!

No problem - how do you transfer the data from the Humax to a hard disk please? (And play it back again?)

Thanks
Jon

Hi Kath and Ted. I can't speak for Bryony but I suppose Bryony has the advantage of living permanently in Spain so has learned the lingo and can watch Spanish TV (and DVD and Wii) - But I guess she and most expats who already have a dish connection and watch UK TV would like to carry on. Most the expats I know would like that.

If they don't have unlimited broadband it is a problem, and an expensive solution. If they already have it the problem is greatly reduced as they have already budgeted and paid the monthly charge. So this thread may not be so interesting to them, apart from the discussion about the Slingbox, perhaps.

I don't think its a 'fuss', we are discussing various ways in which we can get UKTV effectively when the sats go down. Its not a simple answer - for those without unlimited broadband already.

Learning Spanish, sounds easy to some, but when one is not a permanent resident and practicing it daily (the secret to effective language learning IMHO .....and from my experience in French).............. it could be years before one gets to a reasonable level, and Spanish TV becomes understandable.

I see no problem in watching UKTV when in Spain, those that don't want to do that can ignore this thread - its not interesting for them. In my case I have a set up that will allow us to watch Belgian TV too. I am hoping that this discussion will also show a way to get UKTV effectively. Hearing about filmon (from Bryony) was a great step forward.

Once a couch potato...... :)

You plug in a USB hard disk and use File Manager to copy recorded programs to the disk.

You can get into FileManager by pressing Opt+

Do you have broadband over a landline? If so who is your service provider and how good is you telephone link? I am toying with the idea of getting a line now from Telefonica(Movistar) but have been reluctant because of stories of the lack of speed and capacity in the CE area. Adivce from the horse's mouth (so to speak) would be very helpful. Many thankks

Hi Mike, at the moment we have a landline and broadband via BT but are in the process of changing back to Telefonica who will supply the same plus mobiles for a similar price (40ish Euro). So far we have had no probs watching progs using filmon (on PC and iPad, in fact the picture is better on iPad) and whilst using the PC is a bit slow at times there are no such probs with the iPad. If you need more details let me know as it may need Mikes intervention and its the rollup this morning , regards Bryony

I can confirm that. The picture quality is very good - we have a 46" TV and the Filmon picture is as good as the normal SD broadcasts. It is strange that the iPad app is free and gives this quality when the PC needs the expensive HD version.

The essential extra with this option is to get an Apple TV then you can stream wirelessly to the TV via Airplay on the Apple TV box.

You don't need a VPN as Filmon is not geo-restricted like iPlayer etc.

I think the lack of capacity refers more to how far into Esuri you go. The last house with wires is at the top end of Lomas and there were 20 spare connections in that box. Beyond there nothing no wires. Speed is getting better.

Bryony, thanks.
My mother, now into her 80's and on her own living a fabulous independent life in Spain, already does a lot of that right now, thank goodness. If you don't mind, I'll mention your comments to her on Skype rather in person as I don't want to be within shouting distance to hear her response to your idea

Your Mum sounds like a fab person and a good example to other people her age and those of us that are slightly younger, regards Bryony

Interestingly my DNS Proxy service blocks Filmon as "pornography" and "Contravention of German Child Protect Laws" (or similar)

Re: Goodbye Sky TV

Thanks to this thread, Ive had the impetus to make changes, bought the slingbox so whatever happens we have Belgian and major French TV... fully controllable, exactly as we do at home from afar. Great for my wife and I. (it comes w BBC1+2, BBCW, CNN and Bloomberg too)

Then with the right internet package we will get UKTV as well, though the Humax box may sadly bite the dust.... However it has I think other connections so maybe someone - somewhere will think of something to link to it. Ethernet?

To finish the 'installation' here is what I think is a great idea.....

I bought for a few quid an excellent mouse from Amazon. £10

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet-M002.../dp/B001DHECXA

This operates the PC from MANY metres away.... e.g from the armchair across the room - wireless. With the PC connected to the TV, who needs a smart TV, this is much better, with a fully featured PC - and for a tenner you have it!!! Just connect the PC to the Telly.

So this was a good thread.... learned a lot. Thanks to everyone....

Now I live in hope for some internet package - or fix to the satellite problem and bring the cost down:fingerscrossed:

Jon
