I would imagine that there are alternatives to this toll road.
Gibraltar only has one entry/exit road |

Re: Gibraltar Frontier
Somebody on this site once kindly gave me a link to a good Spanish forum - Burbuja Inmobiliaria, where this subject has naturally come up. Beside the 'Perfidious Albion' stuff and the 'Gibraltar is black money and belongs to Spain anyway' line, there are some funny remarks about this situation.
One poster considers the inventiveness of the local bootleggers saying: El resultado - Los contrabandistas de La LÃnea, aparte de tabaco, ahora llevarán personas... The result of all this: the La Linea tobacco smugglers will now have a new product to carry across the frontier: people. |

I think the line La Linea is in dire economic straits and 10,000 unemployed, with no money in its public coffers.says it all.
Also the shops, bars etc in La Linea have a large client percentage based on residents of Gibraltar Causing havoc at the frontier is going to see more La Linea residents unemployed. Mind you one or more Spanish authority causes havoc at the frontier every holiday occasion :frown: |

Re: Gibraltar Frontier
Good picture! La Linea NEEDS Gibraltar. The rest of Spain might not, but the Quite Ghastly Town of La Linea (to give it its full name) certainly does.

Re: Gibraltar Frontier
I remember La Linea from the early 60's when I visited Gib onboard HMS Devonshire. Quite ghastly as stated but with a certain rough charm. Bacardi and coke equivalent to one and sixpence, the shilling was for the coke. Back streets were a nightmare of vice(as I was informed). The trip across from Gib was an adventure in itself with crossing the airport strip and hoping the policia were on a good day.
The Mayor of La Linea is in a win-win situation. He is striking a blow for the rest of Spain by giving the British a black eye. If Gib retaliates and harms La Lineas' livliehood, well it just shows what b------- the British are, doesn't it? There is no easy solution to this, and it has to be handled with kid gloves unless it escalates. Now let us see if the Moroccans do the same with Cueta? |
