Gibraltar Day in London celebrations
Author: GBC
Date: 19 October 2014
The Rock’s history and heritage, economy and culture, are all celebrated at Gibraltar Day in London. The annual event aims to reinforce Gibraltar’s relationship with the UK, strengthening old links and forging new ones. Among those in attendance are Minister for Justice, Gilbert Licudi and Minister for Social Services, Samantha Sacramento, as well as the Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Feetham, and Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Ivor Lopez.
The programme of events began on Sunday, with a mass of thanksgiving at Our Lady of Dolours Servite Church in Fulham officiated by former Bishop of Gibraltar, now Bishop of the Diocese of Hallam, Ralph Heskett, who said it was "a particular delight" to celebrate once more with the people of Gibraltar. Deputy Mayor of Gibraltar, Kaiane Aldorino, and the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, Maighread Condon Simmonds, also both delivered readings at the service. A number of Gibraltarian students also took the opportunity to visit the replica of the statue of Our Lady of Europe, donated to the Church in 2006.
Monday’s Financial Services Lunch sees the Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, address the guests on the opportunities and challenges facing Gibraltar’s economy. A reception on Monday evening, also at the Guildhall, will thank friends of the Rock for their support, and look to Gibraltar’s future. Music will be provided by the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers, with a Sunset Ceremony to follow, carried out by the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band and Corps of Drums, and the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth.
Tuesday sees a number of events aimed at promoting and developing different sectors of Gibraltar’s economy. These include a Maritime and Tourism Breakfast, a Gaming Industry breakfast and a Funds and Asset Managers Lunch, at which the Minister for Financial Services, Albert Isola, will give a keynote address.

RFA ARGUS TO STOP IN GIB
RFA Argus is expected to call at Gibraltar on Tuesday on its way to Sierra Leone where it will join the fight against Ebola.
The Royal Navy's 28,000 tonne floating hospital began its 10 day journey from Cornwall to West Africa on Friday. It will stop on the Rock to collect 32 4x4 vehicles which have been prepared by Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings (TGS) Ltd.
SIX MONTH EBOLA MISSION
The RFA has embarked on a six month mission to fight Ebola in Africa. It carries medecine, food, thousands of bottles of water and other life saving supplies. The 380 strong crew, include 80 medics and 80 Royal Marines to provide security while care is administered. It also carries a fleet of Merlin helicopters to ferry people and supplies.
The state of the art casualty unit boasts one hundred beds but Ebola patients will not be taken on board because of the risk of transmission. Strict protocol procedures have been imposed.
GIVING BACK
Meanwhile, TGS CEO Kevin Jones told GBC that because aid work in Africa is a very significant part of the firm's business, they are donating £25,000 to an NGO working to provide field hospitals for areas in West Africa where the deadly Ebola virus has already claimed thousands of lives and threatens many thousands more.

Gibraltar part of UK's history and future, says Lidington at Guildhall
Author: GBC
Date: 21 October 2014
Gibraltar is an integral part of the history of the United Kingdom – and very much a part of the UK’s future as well. That was the message given by Europe Minister, David Lidington, at the traditional reception at the Guildhall to celebrate Gibraltar Day in London.
Addressing an audience of around a thousand guests, David Lidington reiterated his Government’s commitment to defend and promote the interests of Gibraltar, and never to enter into sovereignty negotiations against the will of its people.
Mr Lidington spoke of the challenges facing Gibraltar – saying he believed lobbying efforts by the UK were starting to pay off with regards to the border, with Spain taking remedial action. He emphasised that Gibraltar’s right not to be excluded from EU aviation legislation was a matter not of political whim or choice, but of law as set out in the European treaties.
In his address, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo read out a message from the Queen – a response from her private secretary to his request for Her Majesty to visit Gibraltar, expressing Queen Elizabeth’s continuing support for the Government and the people of Gibraltar.
Fabian Picardo said “the voice of Gibraltar is loud and clear … but best amplified when working together with Britain on issues of mutual importance”. He said Gibraltar was ready to engage in trilateral dialogue – and to enter into parallel ad hoc talks if parameters can be agreed with Spain.
He outlined a number of recent economic and cultural developments in Gibraltar, including the International Literary Festival, the licensing of the Gibraltar Stock Exchange and the creation of both a national bank and university.
Mr Picardo reiterated that the links between Gibraltar and the UK were as modern as they are historic – with Mr Lidington going on to say the Rock had transformed itself from a military garrison to a modern, dynamic, entrepreneurial society.
The evening came to a close with a Massed Bands Spectacular, which saw the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band and Corps of Drums and the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth perform a Sunset Ceremony.

Gibraltar companies file new court challenge to UK gaming tax
by Brian Reyes
The Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association [GBGA] has filed a legal challenge to the British Government’s plan to levy a 15% tax on online bets placed by punters in the UK.
The move comes just days after the GBGA lost a separate legal bid to halt Britain’s new licencing regime for online gaming companies, which is poised to come into force on November 1.
The association is now seeking a judicial review of the British Government’s plans for a point of consumption tax on remote gambling.

Spanish Civil Guards arrested in anti-tobacco smuggling operation
Author: GBC
Date: 22 October 2014 at 12:02
Four Spanish Civil Guards have been arrested in Algeciras in an anti-tobacco smuggling operation. The Europa Sur newspaper reports that the events unfolded several days ago when a suspect container was being tracked by police officers disguised as stevedores. It was these officers who arrested their colleagues. One of the four was on duty at the frontier inspection post while the other three were manning the customs post. Previously, a lawyer and an ex-local police officer were also arrested.
The operation remains open, as the police is investigating whether anyone else is implicated and if the gang has carried out any other smuggling activities in Algeciras Port. It's also trying to establish the quantities of cigarettes involved.

New Aloes is ‘best property in Europe’
A £10.9m home built on former Ministry of Defence land has won the ‘Best Property Single Unit – Europe’ regional award at the recently held International Property Awards in London.
The property, known as the New Aloes, will now compete against other properties in Africa, Arabia, the Americas, Asia Pacific and the UK for the title of ‘World’s Best’.
The awards were established in 1995, and applicants must apply and pay a fee to enter, the properties are then judged by a panel of 70 experts.
Sandra Lamplough, Marketing Manager for Fairhomes Group, the developer behind New Aloes: “It’s one thing to be acknowledged as having built the best home in Gibraltar but quite another to beat off competition from the likes of Cyprus, Italy, Spain and Montenegro, to earn the accolade of best property in Europe.”
“A great deal of precise engineering, construction and design went into New Aloes and we have been rewarded with the chance to grab World’s Best in Dubai on Thursday 4 December – that would be some early Christmas present.”

Gibraltar joins landmark tax transparency drive
Gibraltar will today sign an international agreement with at least 45 other countries to swap tax information automatically with each other from 2017.
The agreement is being heralded as “the end of banking secrecy” and means tax evaders will have fewer places to hide.
Under the new international automatic exchange agreement information on non-resident high value accounts will be sent to their home tax jurisdictions annually from September 2017.
No formal requests will have to be made and low-value accounts will be reported annually by September 2018.
