Yep we all need to press the 'reset' button and learn to cope with a lower standard of living.
But the politicians need to start - we could do with a lot less 'vanity projects' in Spain.
Yesterday I picked up a free glossy mag that trumpets the doings of the local councils in Baix Emporada. There was a picture of 3 alcalde laying the foundation stone for a new swimming pool complex. This pool will be within a short distance of several other in nearby towns and only a few minutes from the sea, is being built with the help of funds from the Catalan Government.
That would be the same Catalan Govt that asked Madrid for a huge bailout from Madrid, has cut back on the health service and is rationing toilet paper in schools.
I expect its no coincidence there is an election here on 25th Nov. :frown:

I play tennis at an incredible tennis complex here in Oviedo with better courts than I ever seen or played on. Price for rental, 3 euros per hour

Must have cost the council tens of millions, but things like this is what adds to the quality if life for people, it certain adds to mine!

These projects are great as long as they get used, unlike certain airports and conference centres etc that we all know about

Except for Greece's 2nd largest city, whose mayor has taken a free market approach instead of more of the same bureaucracy.

Thessaloniki bucks national trend in fixing city finances

So you think its OK for them to build another swimming pool, (when there are several around already) while Dr's are being sacked and they're asking for billions in a bale out?

No, timing is everything

But as you say, that tennis court is handy. Good thing you paid some taxes at the right "time".

If they could only work on the weather now, but since the Germans are already jealous of us, it probably won't be the next priority.

We've just been down to the local (un)employment office (very helpful people - don't believe all you hear about funcionarios) and they were working but said their lock had been superglued overnight.

Walking back up through the village the owner of the Chinese Bazaar was also trying to break into his own building to open up.:frown:

It all helps the situation I suppose...

According to El Mundo 9 have been arrested in Andalucia and 7 hurt. Mostly confrontations by pickets trying to close down bars and markets etc. El Alhambra is closed and some of the ports.

There appear to be ferries running in and out of Algeciras but there is no container activity which of course is good news for the newish Tangier Medport.

In our village there is just one bar open, three bars, a chemist and two mini markets and a tobacconist are all closed.

There are some buses running but not as many as normal, we did here a train but don't know if it's normal service to Malaga.
As the children were playing it would appear that the schools were also closed for the day.

Just watched a bit of the news coverage from Barcelona.
Cops beating the crap out of helpless teenage girls.
Not a pretty sight.

On UK TV I didn't see them hitting girls, but they were certainly not holding back with the batons....rather brutal I thought.

They are the two countries that have cut spending by the most in Europe

The UK hasnt cut a penny (yet) despite having a much greater debt than the other two

No not Spain and Greece.. Sweden and Germany!

More austerity is needed from the others including UK where they will be paying for Bulgarians and Roumanians soon!
