It's a day of protest in 23 European countries. Basically it's a day for people to take to the streets to show the govt they don't like what's going on. They have quite a long list ...

That is true unfortunately there seems to be no information other than stickers saying it is a day of strike stuck on lamposts I have said to her to try and find out if there is anything happening, I know last time some of the older children and some of the teachers staged a sit in on a roundabout but at the last general strike most of the protests seem to be 40km away and life in our town really went on as normal.
The unions tend to concentrate people in large demonstrations in big cities because they have more impact than lots of small ones. |

Simply another 24 hours worth of debt to add to what already exists. ......but there again much like the Socialists, finance and figures never were the Unions fuerte, ....apart from feathering their own nests of course. |
Re: General Strike
Well here's an interesting perspective on the present job situation.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...896796754.html Many Spanish can't even be bothered turning up for job interviews and aren't really interested in work. Many of those in the demos are obviously quite well off and simply playing politics. Others are well off and quite happy with the status quo making good money on the black. The ones who are really struggling are rarely seen at the demos. Just thought I'd give it an airing as it was mentioned on one of the Spanish news channels. Not exactly my own opinion though there may be a few grains of truth in it. Looks like the main content was cut when I tried to reopen the link,so just as well I summed it up. |

I think not..the simple facts are that the country is spending more than its earning and thats everyones problem. Everyone wants good schools, hospitals, pensions, benefits etc but the money has to come from somewhere! It's not just Spain's problem but most of Europe. The only two countries that have managed to get a grip on the situation have cut public spending and not as some people think to increase it. Going on strike for something that is a worthy cause has my support but the situation that we now face has been caused by greed. :( |

Yesterday I picked up a free glossy mag that trumpets the doings of the local councils in Baix Emporada. There was a picture of 3 alcalde laying the foundation stone for a new swimming pool complex. This pool will be within a short distance of several other in nearby towns and only a few minutes from the sea, is being built with the help of funds from the Catalan Government. That would be the same Catalan Govt that asked Madrid for a huge bailout from Madrid, has cut back on the health service and is rationing toilet paper in schools. I expect its no coincidence there is an election here on 25th Nov. :frown: |
