I'm in the countryside of Alicante Province, 10 minutes from the airport and city centre. If you want to avoid 90% of the crime and scams you read about steer well clear of Expat ghettos, holiday towns or anything else that isolates you from Spanish society. And, when buying, if the estate agent speaks English it's usually a bad sign.

Carole, I like Mojaca, but it's a holiday town, full of ghettos, completely isolated from Spanish society and very badly communicated with the outside world.
