Yeah. It's the rich wot gets the pleasure, it's the poor wot gets the blame. Oh yes. I'm`pig sick of the people who act as tho once we get the tories in, it will be heaven on earth, everyone happy.... yada yada yada. It's a well known fact that the tories are the party of the poor sods at the bottom. |

I have just heard about the election being set for May 6th, is this confirmed? Who do you think will win?! The discussion is who you think will win, rather than who should, perhaps?!

Re: election date...
You're right Elspeth, but people who have family, savings, investments, etc. in the UK will be affected by the results (or not, whatever you believe on this matter). It will also affect whether people can afford to buy properties overseas, etc., depending on what happens with interest rates and the like, and of course whether anyone ever dares bring in the euro...

If the latter, then it matters not who is in. If the former, then I (and I suspect a lot of other people too) haven't forgotten the Lamont disaster vs the period of steady growth under Brown. We haven't forgotten the madness of privitising essential services, or the deregulating of the banks. I genuinely believe that at the time the gold was sold and the pensions were pillaged, then whoever was in at that time would probably ahve done much the same. Easy to say now with the clear vision that is hindsight, that both were dumbass ideas, but at the time it looked like a good idea. Matt, in all honesty, I don't think any of them present me with anyone that I think merits my vote, anyone who inspires or impresses me, and that is possibly the saddest thing of all. Is there any surprise that people don't bother to vote these days? By all means make it compulsory, but if you do, I demand there to be a box on it which I can tick that says 'I hate you all' and that they have to announce how many of those were ticked. On a different note, I would love to see a campaign where we could all vote for which politician we would like to see executed on prime time TV. OK, so the sentance would never be carried out, but I think it would act as a valuable indicator to some of the shifty scum that they are not universally liked, and who knows, it might make them think twice before they screw us over the next time. |

Trouble with that idea is that there wouldn't be any mps left!! Speaking as one who not long ago lost my job and a substantial chunk of pension which was caused to a large extent by the recession, I think that the labour / Brown administration has lost all credibility. No more boom and bust -err no, less regulation for Banks err no -Brown now accepts it should have been more not less, the whole Iraq fiasco - - these are not minor errors of judgement and they clearly need to go. Maybe the Tories are not much better but they also will have learnt from Labours mistakes and at least they can start with a relatively clean slate (inevitably as they haven't been in power for so long). MPs have been greedy and I think overpaid and they need some form of monitoring - once they are in they are in for the duration with no performance or ability checks unlike any other industry. While we're at it they should change the Health Service policy of 6 months residency then claim unlimited Health benefits unlike any other EU country - no wonder asylum seekers are queuing up at Calais. If they changed the rules the problem would be reduced massively overnight (maybe they would stay in France?)
 Look at the tories and Iraq. They were in opposition at the time and their job was to support the government, but not without demanding proof first. After it was clear that the whole WMD fiasco was a lie, the then tory leader said that despite that he would still have followed Bush into Iraq. That's frightening. |
Re: election date...
I am going to vote for the Icelandic Volcano Party. They have done more to stop imigration in the last five days than the Labour Party has done in the last ten years.

Re: election date...
Clegg for PM?
According to the latest news it could happen. He may well be prepared to form a coalition with Labour, but definitely not with Brown in charge,as he apparently hates his guts. |
Re: election date...
It would make a very nice change! I had considered not voting because neither of the other two appeal to be perfectly frank (and I say this as someone who cheered when Labour got in all those years ago), and am being won round by the LibDems. I asked on here before why they have never done better before in the elections, can someone please explain?

Re: election date...
Are they really that bad? I am not politically naive, by no means, but genuinely don't understand what is so unpalatable about them! Apparently their "money man", Vince Cable, is superb and predicted much of this financial mess.
