SALAMANCA – A man cut off his own penis and threw it in a toilet ‘so he would stop sinning’.
The 30-year-old was recovering in the Hospital Clinico Universitario in Salamanca in western Spain.
Doctors said his condition was ‘stable’ and he was not in danger of losing his life.
The man, from Salamanca, cut off his penis with a knife on Thursday morning.
The local newspaper La Gaceta reported when relatives called emergency services, he told ambulance workers he did it “so would not sin any more”.
The newspaper said it was not known if the man’s penis could be sewn back.
There was also a suggestion he may be suffering from psychological problems.

Slightly off topic - but still loosely related to animal welfare/rescue etc (you reminded me Pete, talking about your friends who have a zoo licence)

I have a friend who has lived for most of her life in Barcelona, but now lives here in our village.
She and her family had always had all sorts of animals at home.
One time when she was a child, she and her father visited an ostrich farm here in Extremadura - and the owner told her she could have one of the ostriches that had recently hatched.

So, off she went to Barcelona with this ostrich, and she said it was just like a dog! It followed her everywhere, would sit in the car next to her (!) and would "stay" on command!
Unfortunately, by the time the ostrich was 6 months old, it was too big for them to keep
She had been warned about their phenomenal growth rate, and always knew that she'd have to return it to the farm - so off the poor thing went

I couldn't believe that she could have cared for, nurtured and loved this poor ostrich for 6 months, and then taken it back to face certain death!!
I was so sad when she told me the story, and yet she (in perhaps a more matter of fact Spanish way?) just shrugged and said "well yes, it was sad - but we just couldn't keep her"

Thank goodness these donkeys are enjoying a better life now......................and that they don't grow as quickly as ostriches!!
