Default Cold Weather on the Way?

I'm due to go to Madrid in just over a week's time and have been looking at the 5 - 10 day weather forecasts. I was aghast to see that the minimum night-time temperatures for next week are showing 8C for a couple of nights so far - 8! That's about as low as it ever got last winter in the area of Andalucia I live in.

Is this just a temporary blip or do you weather experts out there think we could be in for a cold winter this year?

We have only paid for 1 checked-in suitcase between us and I'm worried now in case we can't cram in enough winter woollies to keep us warm!

It often cools down a lot at night in Madrid as it's at altitude and also close to some mountains. It can get as cool as 14C at night in august sometimes (although it's hot in the day), and this can make life comfortable in the peak of summer. At this time of year you'll only find it cool after the sun goes down at night and in the morning until 10 or 11. And I stress cool, not cold. It can be very bitter however at times in winter, and snow-capped mountains can be seen on the horizon to the north sometimes until June.

One thing - if you're in your hotel room at night, or in a restaurant, and you start sweating it's not because there is a sudden heatwave. It's because it's clouded over and started raining. The temperature rise is very noticeable.

Always remember too that the minimum temperature quoted for "Madrid" will be far lower if it's referring to the province (Comunidad de Madrid) as opposed to the city itself, which obviously has a micro-climate effect.

Thanks. Yes, your first paragraph describes exactly how the weather was on our last trip, also in late September. That was fine, just the right temperature in the daytime for sightseeing and not too cold at night as long as you wear sensible clothes. I did think 8C was a bit extreme for late September though, and it is still showing that for Sunday on the BBC teletext forecast.

As a woman of a certain age I am only too used to starting to "glow" (only horses sweat, you know!) for no apparent reason, nothing to do with the weather at all!

In Spain, the interior is always cooler than the coastal area, and especially if it comes to mountain areas. And Spain is a very mountainous country (second after of Switzerland, I think). In the case of Madrid, the winters are very harsh, and more in its mountains. For example, in the mountainous areas of Madrid, in the summer, can make cold

I am from the north of Murcia. It is a mountain area, as Caravaca. Caravaca area is in the northwest, with the difference that is most elevated since the sea. Then here snows every winter, while in rest of the province this may be an exception

Sounds perishing!
Definitely cooling off here in the UK, and there are some heavy showers around. But the leaves are changing colour (and dropping) so it's all looking very attractive.

It went very cool here tonight, sat outside I had to put a long sleeved blouse on as the temperature had dropped down to 24C.
Hard to believe that when we lived in England that would have felt hot even in the daytime.

Just like at the beginning of summer it seemed someone had switched a switch, yesterday 31* in the shade, pool still wonderful, burning sun etc. This morning black clouds over Malaga, grey cloud just about everywhere else, spitting rain. Still not cold, thankfully - but 20 is a lot different to yesterday! Autumn methinks?

Unfortunately where I am it is not just cold but damp and sometimes excruciatingly wet. I do however like a change in seasons - wall-to-wall sunshine 365 days a year would be boring for me. The great thing is that the colder weather means that I can go to town with the slow cooker. Last night I did a beef and vegetable casserole in it. There is always a bright side.

Actually slept with no fans running for the past 2 nights, great. Prefer the temperature as it is now, do not want it to be any cooler but know that it will, shame. Do not like it too hot or too cold, could not live somewhere like Canada.
