In Norse mythology, Fenris has failed to eat the sun, the weakening sun will now grow strong and the ice giants will have to go back to sleep for another year. If Fenris ever wins, the ice giants will wake and challenge the gods at the birfrost bridge for dominion over valhalla.
The political organisation known as the christian church stole xmas from the pagans and dressed it up for their own purposes.
As for the holly, the mistletoe and the ivy. These are old pagan symbols from way before the xtians. The holly symbolises blood, the mistletoe semen and the ivy is the Old Green, the pagan power that does not die, but remains green throughout the hardest winter.

The true meaning of xmas is that it is the winter solstice. The 25th is allegedly the first day that you can tell that the days are growing longer.
In Norse mythology, Fenris has failed to eat the sun, the weakening sun will now grow strong and the ice giants will have to go back to sleep for another year. If Fenris ever wins, the ice giants will wake and challenge the gods at the birfrost bridge for dominion over valhalla.

I did not know that mistletoe was so "complicated"
And we thought it was just an excuse for a snogfest.

I find it highly amusing when the real, god-bothering xtians have the holly etc all up. Their faces are a picture when you point out that what they are displaying is pagan 'black' magic.

Yeah, yeah but (and I know it won't happen but I'll remain Mrs Grumpy in the vain hope it does...) until we start boycotting places that wheel out the Xmas stuff in late summer, clogging up the supermarket aisles & whipping the littlies into a frenzy of 'I want' for a clear THREE MONTHS before they have a hope of getting anything, none of us stands a chance of avoiding the commercialfest that is all it's become, whatever the true 'meaning' or origins.
