It gets worse - new cameras coming in can figure out your average speed between two points - and fine you.

Still a long way to go before Spain gets the same amount of cameras to that other EU countries.

I blame Tony Blair, told the Spanish how to get a fast buck from the motorist

They've been doing that for years in the UK. Anyway the simple answer is don't speed and you have nothing to worry about. Personally I just set the cruise control at the speed limit.

It's not always that simple.
You can get caught up in the flow of traffic with cars right up your ar5e and yourself unable to move over to let them past. Often easier simply to speed up.
Setting your cruise to the speed limit is only any good on a quiet road because most drivers are unable to maintain a constant speed without the cruise so you always end up having to intervene and then reset.
I personally believe that too many speed cameras add to the danger of driving because you have to keep one eye on your speedo all the time. If you're more concerned with not inching a few kms over the limit then you're not concentrating fully on the road ahead.

Incidentally the new anti speeding campaign is focussing on non motorway roads as that is where 80% of all accidents happen.

How does a speed camera know that you're overtaking?

We use Tomtom, at least it tells you whenever you have gone over the speed limit, without having to watch the speed dial all the time.

French toll roads have been doing that for years, they log the time you take the ticket at the start, then when you reach the end of the toll section the machine automatically works out how long it has taken you, too fast and you get ticketed, they also find out if you have stopped overnight at a rest stop, which is illegal, so two ways of catching you there.
