Mr N is more practical than me, if i had my way and my eldest was not going to do her gcse's i would just hop on a plane rent then worry about paying the rent when i get there lol.

But Mr N wants it done perfect now :sneaky:

He has a point.

I have been talking to people for months about maybe going, and have spread the network net bloody wide, my OH even spoke to some friends who travel to Spain on competitions every year and got some contacts through them.

Dont get me wrong, we wont be coming out with a couple of grand, and we will be paying the years rent up front, but it wont be a fortune and it wont need to be, we live a very frugal life here in the UK.

Listening to Posh on TV she was definitely expecting a better quality of life in the USA.... and many would envy her life. I sincerely don't.
A life completely free from stress ?? Well get measured for that coffin...
It amuses me that some of the Chiclaneros head to Malaga and Fuengirola for their holidays.
A lot of common sense in the many replies.
However....
I was at a wedding in Folkestone this weekend. Wonderful venue on the cliffs looking over to France. Folkestone on the up. And yet there was something sleazy about it, that places like Chiclana or Tarifa if we want to compare with a busy port do not have. They can be a bit hick, have many tourists, but there is still a different atmosphere. Admittedly the weather helps. And Pete, in case you haven't realised, Spain had the smoking ban long before Britain..

Yes maybe it did but the Spanish people have balls !! Unlike the Brits , and ignore it most the time

but there are lots of plus sides to living here but it all comes down to the fact that no one really knows what its like ( or even if Spain is for them) until they live here - in the 4 1/2 years we have been here we have seen so many people come and go and all the friends we made when we first arrived have left to go back :(

Why did you move to Spain  And more to the point why are you still there

 Good post.

Very soon job situation in UK will hit mega problems , so think the job issue will be tough in Uk also .. Now with money tight surely better to be out of work on a beach with sexy scantily clad women than a beach where you get messed on by seagulls

Im not putting a downer on the thread just being realistic

when you have lived in Spain for a couple of years come back and let us know your experiences

"quality of life" is what you make it where ever you live but as I have said in the short time we have been here a very high percentage of people have gone back to UK . so obviously their quality of life was not what the expected !!!! thats a fact

key factors are
the language - even fluent Spanish speakers find it difficult to find a relatively good job
work - as above and if you do find work, wages and hours are often crap
cheaper living costs - hmmm well thats debateful, fags, booze, road tax, council tax, eating out all cheaper - but the wages reflect that and what about the things that are more expensive

anyway, I wish you well in your move to Spain and hope it all turns out as you expected

Whats more expensive then ? lets have a laugh seeings as you just listed ;
fags £ 4 per pack cheaper
booze half price
road tax and fuels cheaper
Council taxes £ 1600 a year cheaper !!! approx £ 30 a week cheaper ..
eating out and food cheaper

So what is dearer ?

£ 30 a week better off in Council tax
£ 35 a week better off if you smoke only 30 a day
£ 20 a week better off if you only have a few pints ,few days a week
£ 6 a week in car tax better off
£ 18 a week better off in Road Fuels using car daily small journeys
£ 25 a week cheaper on average shop

£ 129 a week !!!! better off the moment i land in Mallorca hmmm a tough decision sun sea boat villa and cheap living hmmmmmm heck what a tough one
But Damn whats dearer by £ 129 a week  so please tell ...
