Being ripped off.

I had one in UK that I went there when I first got teeth and went to him when I arrived back from Oz, but he has now retired.
I used to really trust him and totally put myself in his hands. I also had a couple of good ones when I was in Oz and didn't need much doing. It was a nightmare going to Dr Hell. And I now physically shake when I have to go in and sit in the chair. I think any dentist who does work on teeth that don't need doing to all for the sake of money should be sat in the chair themselves and all their teeth taken out........slowly....

Oh my goodness!!
I'm terrified of the dentist, and I've got toothache just reading some of these posts!
I've been going to the same dentist in Devon, since I was 11 (quite a long time now!
)
When I moved to Somerset, I continued travelling to the same dentist......and now I'm in Spain, I'm still going to him!
He knows what a big baby I am, he's soooooooo nice to me (and he's handsome!)
He became a private dentist some time ago, so now I just phone up, say I'm visiting the UK and make an appointment. He's lovely!
(But my stomach still goes into knots, my mouth goes dry and my toes curl up until I hear those magic words "no Sam, nothing needs doing!")

Don't worry Lionda.
We've got a brilliant dentist here.
He's South African, has worked in the UK for many years and now has his surgery in Calpe. Only problem is he is private, but he does accept credit and debit cards.
You can watch on a screen as he shows you exactly what the problem is and what he's doing......well, that's only if you're brave and don't shut your eyes

Our builder is also our Spanish neighbour and he and his son did brilliant work on our house for less than a third of the charge a Brit builder (who is now back in the UK) quoted.
The building materials are reasonably priced from the local builder's yard and if they don't know the price offhand, they'll let you take the stuff and pay them 'mañana'.
My hairdresser is British, she is the best hairdresser I have ever had, and charges me 5 euros to cut my hair.
We have kept our British Dentist - mainly because when we came here, my husband was still completing a course of treatment under the NHS, he was allowed to complete his treatment. Since then our Dentist has gone private, but we just ring up and say when we are coming and they make us an appointment.

My experiences with British dentists are frightening ,so much so i'd rather not say anything except, but in short, i ended up eventually having to have most top teeth out ( good teeth too ) after being told originally i need caps
on my teeth, then my real teeth underneath decayed because the cappings were not done properly, then another yes British dentist did some "repair" work, and to cut a long story short i had to have them all out. Wonderful!!!.
after many too many thousands of pounds & insufferable pain & torture ....( This was whilst i lived in UK. )
I tried suing the dentists but being in Uk,
"we, the public " never seem to get anywhere except the last
dentist didnt charge me. Thanks very much, after being left
with no choice but to perhaps have implants ! I can assure you,
i will never sit in any British dentists chair, ever again ....
Now that i live in Belgium i have the best dentist in the
world and he is also a professor here etc etc and most
of his clients are top notch people too who trust him
implicitly, which has been the case for many a yr, so all
i can offer to anyone, if you need any works done to
your teeth, let me know and I will give you his coordinates etc ..
It will be worth ever penny to see him here. He also doesnt
charge the earth either. ( as a guide: about half of UK prices ...)
If i lived in Alaska and needed treatment, i would travel back to
Belgium to my dentist. That goes for most healthcare/medical
things too.
Not having experience with British builders i cannot comment..
As for hairdressers.. well i am /was one and i can understand
how some of you ladies feel about going to a new
hairdresser, but I got top honors at a
Vidal Sasson course in London, Bond St it was
at the time , for cutting and colouring to be precise...
ok, ok it was 20yrs ago!!!!

I think my Brit was also charging British prices. Doing my own little bit of research I've found the materials are cheap here, ie bricks, blocks, cement etc. Going direct to a Spaniard who did my garden and the Hungarian said that it was good work as well as the Brit did (he was nothing to do with the Brit) compared to when the Hungarian saw some of the Brits work he tried not to laugh.
But I found the Spanish charged me 120 Euros per man. The Brit was charging more, which someone on here also pointed out to me...politely, I was a mug...
Since building isn't my field anywhere, I guess it is all a learning curve, I look at it as an expensive way of doing my appreticeship (sp)
.
Apart from building I also have a bad experience with a dentist, which they did work on perfectly healthy teeth, I found this out when they capped them and it fell off and I went back. The dentist was away so I asked to see my notes as I was going to take them to another dentist and they wouldn't let me. I ran off with them, with her chasing me up the street. But it was scary to see that they had done quite a bit of work on teeth that shouldn't have been touched looking at the x rays and I showed them to another dentist and he confirmed. However since he was another European and the dentist was Spanish and had clout he wouldn't do anything to support me claiming damages. But that work that Spanish dentist did, has cost me thousands and I'm still paying for it as I've had nothing but problems. Another area to be careful off. This dentist was in Fuegirola (sp) near the Horse fountain. They don't have resident dentists in some places, they basically are renting the room/equipment, and you can go back and they are no longer there also. Something I hadn't crossed living any other country I had lived in before.
Someone told me that some doctors and dentists that have been struck off sometimes come down to Spain and open up shop.

How long was it before you had problems with your crowns?
I've noticed a trend lately where by they seem to be pushing more cosmetic dentistry as it pays better. I've heard even with the private hospitals here that often they give you treatments that you don't necessarily need, as they can claim it on the insurance. I knew one of the directors of the private hospitals here and they are going more down the cosmetic line as it is more profitable than normal stuff.

I cannot quite remember how long before the trouble
started, perhaps about 3/4 yrs after they were done,
but also the problems became with the teeth below
the crowns decaying one by one after each other..
(So they couldnt have bene done well in the first place ??)
But this all happened about 15 yrsd ago so maybe the crowns
are done much better today, i really dont know.
I thought i was going to the "best" private specialists who were
all in the Surrey in the so called stockbroker belt too.. !!!!
But anyway, my general experience from most dentist
work is very suspect and I now wont have anything done
to my teeth unless its absolutely required.
However, my dentist here i trust completely, but I
still will only have whats necessary..
Strangely, for the past few ys when i go for check ups,
he doesnt "find" anything to do???
