As far as the latter half of the original post is concerned, the IMF's third monitoring report on the state of Spanish banks following the bail-out is currently under way, and their findings are expected to be published at the end of this month, so perhaps we can manage to contain ourselves for two weeks or so to find out how things are progressing.

Certainly hasn't helped Spain, I see today the fourth and final part (R-2) of Aznar's ring roads around Madrid has been declared insolvent, bust, with huge debts like the other three.

So what's fresh. Fiestas have always come near the top of the priority list.
You are living in Spain aren't you, Dom ?
It was that way right through Francos time which were harder in many respects than they are now and have continued ever since, crisis or no crisis.
The size of some of the firework displays and pageantry in relation to the population of often tiny villages is mind boggling.
There is a lot of rivalry involved and they hate it for word to be going around that the neighbouring village put on a much better display than themselves.
You are clearly not integrated Dom,
, not to be fully aware when these events are coming up.
The locals have them all ingrained into their minds from birth and are already dusting off and polishing up their outfits and equipment weeks before the occasions themselves arise.
