A huge problem with acrylics it that they dry out very quickly in heat. A cheap way to slow this process is to create a palette by placing six layers of kitchen roll onto a large soup plate not bowl, well soak with water so that they are sodden but not floating. Put a layer of greaseproof paper on top and this is the surface on which you put your acrylic paint. Try not to take out too many colours or too much paint at the beginning because this is still not foolproof and they will still dry.

Great tip thanks Graham, I have never used acrylics and did not even consider the heat..learning all the time...;)

Rosemary..you never know until you try..I use something called Nu clay, it has fibre in it and it air dries, you can also keep it moist to carry on working with another day..when dry it paints up really well..I had never touched clay until 3 years ago..it's good fun...

I actually made some modern art for our home and i only used paint pot testers from B&Q.
I then painted my main colour over the canvas and then with masking tape coloured the bits in i wanted.

And to be honest the amount of ppl who ask where i got it from as they love it, has been nearly everyone who has seen it.

Its my own work and it saved me a fortune on buying ones already done

I used to work therapeutically with children and the best thing about our sessions was how superior they became over their efforts with clay and their laughter at my efforts.

Not nodding off.

I will have to get some and try it. Not sure what we used to be provided with, probably some cheap rubbish.

Hi Silverchick...I somehow thought you may have been artistic, don't leave anything behind you, with the new start in spain it will get you going again, I seem to remember MnM saying that you should bring paint with you, you should be fine with Mosaics, can't say about the other stuff, I am sure someone will tell us..what is your favorite craft/art...?...

well i really like using acrylic paint on terracotta, its a really good thing to play around in, when i got married i made all my own table dec with a flowerpot painted in cream paint, with a bit of gold dry brushed on, put a bit church candle and surrounded it with dried roses and gyp. they did look lovely! people asked to take them home!
i also had a spate of painting sunflowers on pots. I've also done decopage on papier mache , made a standing cat for my mum out of a coke bottle and carrier bags, then moulded papiwer mache on top, painted with that white glue that goes clear, stuck floral wrapping paper on top and them covered with glue again. it did look good when i finished it, sat by her fireplace for years!

Hi BB,

Michael says that you should prime the canvas with gesso. You should be able to buy it from the same place you are buying your canvases. You can mix gesso and pva to get some texture. You can even mix some plaster to get even more texture, or just buy a texture additive.

For acrylic paints, you can buy a wet palette (it's not massively expensive), it keeps acrylic paint wet for weeks.

Great thread by the way ;)

I have however tried a multitude of others, in fact am dreading sorting out the cupboard under the stairs before the move as its full of various 'crafts' hardwear I've put away and not used again! I do intend however to take up many of these again when in Spain, as I will have a bit more time on my hands. Are craft supplies fairly easy to obtain? things like acrylic paints, mosaic tiles card making bits and bobs?
Back to your question, I would think maybe to prime it with a base of acrylic paint, if its textured?

Depends on where you are, there is a lot of artist materials available and many shops selling canvas, paint, brushes, paints for glass and ceramics. There are, certainly around here. plenty of craft shops selling card making materials, and if you can't get it locally, there is always e bay, postage for that sort of thing isn't that high. There are also numerous stalls at car boot sales selling such materials. My wife buys hers from them or from e bay.
