The thing to do is to buy something when you are ready and you need it. Don't wait until you have wasted five years just so you can say 'I bought at the bottom' - then drop dead the following morning!

Employers are getting very picky (especially in certain occupations) about not wanting to hire the mature worker, so I can only echo what Lenox says. Plus, mortgages can be harder if you try and get one when older.

Gripping stuff as always. but, was the story prepared before the interviews were ever made? See here.

So no truth in any of it then? They made it all up.... or is it a 'head in the Spanish sand' moment for posters denying it?

I've known various Spanish who've spent time in the UK over the years (Midlands, Oxford and London), and the ones around 20 or 25 have always gone back to Spain. The last couple were around mid twenties - she had a high paying pharma-biological job, and he was just here for a year to improve his English. Now, they may be the exception, as the bloke had a graphic design job (websites) to go back to, and she managed to get another job in her profession, but if the "taste of the wages" was paramount, they wouldn't have gone back (to Navarra as it happens). Now I have also met quite a few Spanish who settled in the UK, in their 50s or above now. For some reason they were always Gallegos with the exception of a couple of elderly Madrilenos I knew (who'd ended up here during the Franco years). Perhaps they preferred the UK climate ;)

Well one thing's for sure and that is that London is more popular than ever with young folk from all over the World.
I was chatting with my solicitor who has a daughter living and working there, as I have, and he commented how it's now very much a young ppls city.
The Spanish seem to like it and now I hear there is a mass exodus from Ireland.
Many of them see much less prospect of Ireland recovering in their lifetime than do the Spanish, so London is high on their list of popular destinations, along with the major Commonwealth countries.

Well yes, you only have to catch the Tube to hear the accents from all over the world. Some will stay no doubt, but for most (including native Brits) it's not a place you want to grow old in, unless you're earning millions. I reckon I'm here 5 years at the max., and will try and enjoy every minute. However, if I get too enthusiastic about the place I only need to walk down Oxford Street, or look at the Tube prices, to realise it has bad points too.

Jeez, rush hour on the tube what a bloody nightmare, packed in like sardines, rattling along through those tunnels.
I only experienced it occasionally in passing through, but those who have to do it every day have my deepest sympathy.
To be fair there are a few pleasant parks and open spaces here and there, where you can get away from the worst of the rat-race.

First week back, beginning of Feb,quite pleasant daytime but bloody freezing with frost at night. Second week a tad better.
Now it getting to late evening and I'm sitting with the door open and outside temperature is as good as inside,a few Spring flowers showing and the lizards are now active on a night, keeping the mut busy trying to catch them.

Where we are it's been such a mild winter, we have barely seen any sub zero temps.

If you didn't see it last night, watch Panorama. It was about Ireland, and how they got into such a mess. Like Spain, who were building more than than Germany, France and UK combined, Ireland was building 5 times what UK were building. Then it all went pear shaped, and they interviewed people that were millions in debt, lost everything. The outcome was that thousands had come to Ireland to work in new businesses that were now closed, and they predicted 1,000 a week would be leaving this year. So leaving they certainly will be, and you're probably right, some will be heading for London.

I think there was too much truth in it for them, hence the communal strop here and in the DM's comments.

Thought so....

Spanish property prices are not exactly big news here in Australia so I've no real idea about what's happening to them. I was aware of the building boom in the past and that the Spanish economy was now in the bin, so no great shock to hear of a property crash.

We obviously should have moved 30 Kms up the coast to where you are Bil. Because commeth mid December we leg it back to the UK cause its far too cold and we can't do without our central heating. Come back again end of March and leg it back to UK end of June and back again in September.

We could stay in July and August with the aircon on but how stupid would that be. We know a lot who do so we leave it for the hordes from Madrid who fill the beaches and roads.

Each to his or her own, we reckon we get the best of it.

Absolutely. Find a spot where you are happiest. We simply couldn't have afforded to take early retirement had we stayed in the UK, and besides, where we are the heat isn't so oppressive as it is in some places apparantly.

We only use the a/c sporadically, keeping the house as cool as we can using alternative methods. Come winter we just snuggle up to the woodburner and watch crap TV. We don't bother with central heating but I have just finished putting in a ventilation system that blows warm air from the livingroom into our bedroom to warm it of an evening.

Going to and fro would be difficult as if we did, the garden would suffer, and I like my fresh oranges and mandarins at xmas!

It is very much each to his own. If we were toing and froing I think Id forget where I really lived plus we have a daughter at school here.

Summer and wintertime can be harsh but we dont care anymore because the end of next month we are moving to a house in town, 5 mins walk from school and its got central heating and aircon.

Cant wait.

Absolutely that's my experience too.

I know probably 10 Spaniards who we either met in London or my OH did her degree with. They moved to London in order to get a good job after graduating, but they all dreamt of moving back to Spain after getting experience for their CV - and over the past few years at least 7 of them are now back in Spain working in a good job.

Re: Ah! The Daily Mail

Well, it's different. The Spanish are happy enough to work elsewhere, but always with the intention of returning to Spain. As often as not, they will consider retirement to 'their pueblo', but not to foreign parts.
How many Spaniards are there who work all day, year in and year out, saving slowly enough money...
to retire to a nice little coastal home in Scotland?
Which explains, perhaps, why there isn't an equivalent here to the Daily Mail.

No, although there is plenty of right wing press in Spain it isnt patronising and condoscending about how people live their lives. Just scarily religious and fascist

I also find the Guardian to be like Daily Mail (although slightly more liberal than the Mail). Always telling you what you should think, buy and be doing in your life, it's like brain washing!

Maybe it is a trait of the British middle classes, they dont like people who either are doing better than them, or live a very different life to them.
