I don't know any spanish that would go in a British bar. I have seen some in the Manila bar in Fuengy. Still I bow to the superior knowledge of some posters who seem to know more about the spanish than people born here!

If the spanish do use the Brit bars why do you think that is? Most people on here say they don't even go in them:huh:

A lot of Spanish go for British fish and chips. We have taken loads with us and they cant wait to go back, although they were a bit reluctant to go in the first place.

My cousin, hubby and their little one, are coming to stay with us for a couple of weeks and are so looking forward to eating F&C again.

In my opinion the Spanish may cut down on sunbeds, but when they eat out they go for good quality and dont mind paying for it, even if they have to eat out less often.

The main bug bear the Spanish have about British bars, is the coffee, they say that foreigners do not have the touch and it does not tast the same.

It is also a fact that British tourists are thin on the ground and that there are too many British bars, Go anywhere on the coast right now and the majority of visitors are spanish and according to the media they aren't spending either. Doesn't matter how good your spanish is you won't make it. Nearly everyone I know who hasn't retired seems to be living hand to mouth. Property sales and rentals, painting, taxi runs, anything to get money, wouldn't be my choice of a life!

We used to have a lot of Spanish in our bar.

In certain Irish pubs in Madrid, the best customers are Spanish, albeit those who go in at 11 or 12 at night for a whisky-coca cola. I don't see many attempting a British breakfast earlier in the day, although I saw VIPs had their own version of desayuno ingles (included chips, believe it or not!)

I think this is sadly true. Here in the UK I tend to avoid coffee away from home, unless it's either a Portuguese or Italian place with proper coffee espresso machines. Maybe someone can set up a course for the Brits in serving good Spanish coffee (it would only need to be a day or even a half-day course). I'd be very tempted to enrol!

Most bars do have a good cafetera, so maybe a course is a good idea.
I enjoy the coffee usually, but I am more a pint or mug of tea man myself.

There are a few reasons why a Spanish person may eat at a British bar on the Costas:
1. the novelty. if they are from madrid etc it will seem exotic to them
2. the price. A lunch at a British place will nearly always be cheaper at a Spanish one. The Brit places are an alternative to McDonalds to them
3. you can eat light. You can grab a toastie or baguette for 2-4 euros, while you may be looking at 10 euros upwards a head at a Spanish place

However, while these guys may go once, who knows whether they will come back. British food has a terrible reputation among Spaniards, but at the price they may stick with it

Where I live, the Spanish holidaymakers by far outnumber the British ones in July and August, mostly Madrilenos. There are two Bar Restaurants nearby, about the same size and very similar in all respects, but one is obviously Spanish, the other obviously British.

Apart from a few stragglers, and long term residents like myself, the two don't mix, yet they sell the same beer and the same coffee, from the same suppliers, at the same price. The food in both is similar too, it comes from the same supplier. I can't think of an obvious difference, although the Spanish TV may be a bit louder and have less ashtrays than the British bar.

There is one difference, the British bar has a 'for sale' sign in the window.

Sure, for breakfast or merienda, not for lunch! There's not a Spaniard in the world who would have that for lunch, they need much more food!

Here, you can eat at lunchtime more cheaply at a Spanish place. Menu Del Dia, 3 courses plus drink 7€. Can't think of an English run place round here that can equal that. The Brit run places are more expensive while the Spanish are competing for customers (don't know how they can make any money at these prices).

I think that the "eat till you explode" free buffet places, might do OK- I have heard lots of conversations amongst people saying that they favour this type of placeñ, because you can skip a meal, or just have a small snack later......Im not so sure.
If I start the day eating a huge brekkie, I usually want a big lunch and dinner too.

Well I am confused now:huh: I have been reading posts on here from all of you (for years) which were slagging off Brit bars for having awful food and over the top prices. Suddenly they are the bees knees and all the spanish are flocking in them:blink: Certainly isn't like that from what I have seen----------anywhere. (discounting the Irish pubs )

Re: Advice - leasing bar in spain????

I think they are awful (sorry!), but they are certainly cheap. Around Los Boliches or Fuengirola (for example) all the cheap places to eat are British. The expensive places are aimed at the Spanish market and mainly frequented by Spanish customers. Think 40 euros a head for a parillada de marisco

What I have noticed is that with the more difficult economic times I have spotted some Spanish people - mainly young adults at the British places next to big signs saying English breakfast 1 euro 99.

Without wishing to sound too condescending, I use my own eyes rather than trusting the media. This summer there are definitely more Spanish in our area (which is on the Costa Blanca rather than the Costa del Sol so we shouldn't base our own facts on Malaga-based newspapers like Diario Sur) and they seem to be spending quite happily (albeit still moaning about the state of the world economy; they may claim they are broke but still find enough cash to buy several expensive cocktails and a bocata in a xiringuito!) I have just walked along the promenade and the sun-beds are at almost total occupancy - but I suppose I should rely on newspaper reports instead. ;)

Without wishing to pass on their contact details as proof, I can only reiterate that I know plenty of Spaniards who frequent Brit bars in our area (especially since most play in the region's darts league, a competition dominated by Spanish bars for years). The cheap prices are certainly a lure (although at the expense of the profit margin for the bar owner) and the point on the Irish bars is well made as the one in our area is predominantly occupied by the Spanish. On a personal level, I don't have any specific idea as to why they should attract Spaniards (and, to be honest, most Brit bars don't attract them at all) but to dismiss the notion entirely is somewhat naive.
