Re: Advice - leasing bar in spain????

To the OP.......

The tiny town we live in, Cadiar, has at least 8 bars, none of which I enjoy visiting.

What is it with the need to suffocate your customers with cigarette smoke and make them wade through piles of sandwich wrapers and fag ends?

I've spoken to the next generation of Spaniards and they agree, they are looking for something a bit less trashy too.

Call me negative but the bar food generally is crap. I would much rather pay for half decent food than suffer the "tapas" some of these places serve up.

My advice, be different..... fit good extractor fans, show good sports T.V., serve COLD beer and decent food, English or Spanish....or whatever.

Let me know when you open and I'll be there.

Yeah but some of came here to try and escape all that
We have cold beer
As a non smoker I'm not too bothered about smokers in the bar, windows are normally open
Food is good

Always good and bad bars everywhere, but in my experience the Spanish (and the English) wont accept bad food and vote with their feet .... consequently the standard tends to be very good or they dont survive ... at least around here.

Hi Mitzboy,

I am only speaking from personal experience and only of Cadiar.

Escape from all what? Sport TV, crap food., (you are lucky if you have truly cold beer).....?

As for voting with feet the bars in Cadiar are so quiet that 1 closed just last week and more to follow I think.

As a probable candidate for alcoholism I have spent a lot of my hard earned in bars but that expenditure has been rerouted back to my wallet.

My point was that the (OP) prospective bar owners need to consider ALL their customers if they want to do well.

You, as a non smoker, should not be bothered AT ALL about smokers as there should be proper ventilation.

It hacked me off having to strip down to my shreddies on the stairs to confine the stench of fag smoke on my clothing.

As for "tapas" in Cadiar, it was like a quiz night as in "Guess what it might be".

But really, why not make a little extra effort then everyone is happy and the tills are full?

Anyone agree?

I didnt explain myself very well.
In the UK everything is regulated down to the last nut and bolt. Its all very clinical.
I find it a refreshing change to go into a bar in Spain and experience what you describe, because at the end of the day ITS MY CHOICE if I dont want to go into a bar with nut kernals by the bar area, and old guy in the corner chain smoking, locals talking loudly at the bar.

In the UK the pubs have lost their atmosphere. They are clinical. The local bar in Birmingham City Centre I used to go to is just not the same any more and people have voted with their feet as its one of the reasons pubs are closing down all the time.

I'm not saying that we should endure filth and hazey smokey rooms, but in my experience thats not what you get in the local bars here. I like them as they are without SKY Sports :)
