Re: Canadian child visa with Brit-by-descent parent

If you have sole parental responsibility - note this is not the same as having sole custody - then can apply for ILE for your children from Canada. You only have to meet the adequate maintenance and...

Re: 4L: Born in UK in 1990 to Non-Settled Parents, but w/ British-born Grandmoth

In that case in the unlikely event your Section 4L application isn't accepted then you will certainly qualify for a UK Ancestry visa providing you can get your Canadian citizenship recognised.

Re: Unique and Urgent Section 4L Reconsideration

I rarely make this suggestion but I would look to engage a competent immigration solicitor to go through the whole thing with you because something here doesn't pass the sniff test.

Re: Dual citizen flying to UK

If you have a valid ETA linked to your US passport then you can travel on that for your entire trip.

Re: Section 4L children

If there had been no gender discrimination then none of your children would be eligible to be registered as British citizens, regardless of their age.

Re: Would I Be Registered for 4L or 4C?

You'll need to apply to be registered under Section 4L using Form ARD so you'll become a British citizen otherwise than by descent. See Example 13...

Re: Dual citizen flying to UK

There are no formal passport exit controls in the US or UK so you should check-in with your British passport when leaving the US and use it in the ePassport gates on arrival in the UK.

On the way...

Re: British Passport Application - Major Issue with Name Change

Without knowing the specific countries involved, it’s not possible to give you an informed opinion.

Re: Unique and Urgent Section 4L Reconsideration

I can only assume that this is an identity issue - that HMPO do not believe that your father was born in the UK - rather than a nationality issue. Has your father's British passport been revoked?

Re: 4L and double descent questions; American born 1993t

As you were born after 1987, to be eligible for registration under Section 4L, you would need to demonstrate that your mother had tried to move to the UK before you were born - for instance, to...

Re: British Passport Application - Major Issue with Name Change

It would be useful to know which countries you currently hold passports from as HMPO policy regarding names will vary depending on this.

Re: ETA - Dual citizens must have valid UK passport

In all these cases the person "stuck" could simply apply for an ETA but they have been told they "can't" and so don't. The reality is the airlines don't know or care about the minutiae of British...

Re: ETA - Dual citizens must have valid UK passport

If someone has a valid ETA or visa linked to their non-British/Irish passport then they won’t be refused boarding. The woman in the article you linked to had neither which is why she was refused...

Re: ETA in effect for Canadians 25 February 2026

If you already have a valid ETA then you can simply travel on that. Neither the airline nor UK Border Force will care.

Re: Unique and Urgent Section 4L Reconsideration

Is your father’s nationality in doubt or his identity? The former should just require his full birth certificate - his parents’ documents are irrelevant.

Re: Unique and Urgent Section 4L Reconsideration

If your father was born in the UK in 1962 then I’m at loss as to why his nationality is in doubt unless his father was a diplomat.

Re: Unique and Urgent Section 4L Reconsideration

Some background information would be useful. Where were you and your parents born? Why was your father’s nationality status disputed?

Re: Dual citizen flying to UK

It doesn’t particularly matter since you’ll need to show other one at check-in for the other flight. If I was living in the US however then I’d add your US passport details to the booking and...

Has a countersignatory been requested by HMPO or are you just assuming you will require one?

Re: Struggling to find a countersignatory for a UK passport renewal

If you only got your British first passport five years ago then, unless your appearance has changed drastically in that space of time, you shouldn't require a countersignatory.

Re: 4L: Born in UK in 1990 to Non-Settled Parents, but w/ British-born Grandmoth

That's a very interesting scenario, but yes, you would appear to have a claim. Can I ask whether your mother have any Canadian-born ancestors?

Re: 2025 Applying for British Citizenship
