Thanks, it could just be that I'm worrying unnecassarily I suppose. I do have a fair amount of cash readily available but was hoping to find a place to live before I really started serious job...

So basically Toronto is pretty much a no-go area for new arrivals who need to rent then.

Not that promising for a city which prides itself on being a beacon of multiculturalism.

Thanks man, I think to be honest we're probably going to have to start looking at house shares and other alternatives to renting our own private apartment which is something I've never done before...

Well we are currently only planning to be in Toronto for around 8 months (hence why we ideally don't want to buy a load of furniture) so we were just looking for a short term rental really but we can...

That will explain a lot then, we enquired about 3 apartments in Toronto last week and heard precisely nothing back.

I had just put it down to rudeness on the part of the landlords to be honest.
