Re: Thanksgiving

That reminds me of when my husband made biscuits and gravy and used powdered sugar instead of flour for the gravy. He served it to my parents (hadn't tasted it) then realized his error and was...

Re: Thanksgiving

I made a spinach salad with a homemade balsamic dressing. The salad also contained sliced pear, cranberries, red onion and chopped toasted hazelnuts. It was my attempt to add something a bit...

Re: Thanksgiving

I did roast them first! Still a giant pain and I couldn't get them all off. Oh well, good enough I suppose. :)

You would have liked our house today, we toasted both almonds and hazelnuts. ...

Re: Thanksgiving

Today I learned that it's very difficult to get the skins off of hazelnuts.

Re: Thanksgiving

We're going to skip it. We have a 40% chance of precipitation on Thanksgiving day so it sounds like a bad idea.

Re: Thanksgiving

It might be quite a hassle, but it would also keep the bird out of the oven. I think I'm leaning toward skipping it this time ... but we'll see what my husband decides! I've never had it and have...

Re: Thanksgiving

My father is convinced that we'll end up with third degree burns if we try this and that it's a terrible, terrible idea.

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed now that our number has been confirmed at...

Re: Thanksgiving

Hmmm ... so now OH is thinking he may want to try deep frying a turkey (or two) this year. Supposedly it's easy and the turkey is phenomenal. Has anyone done it?

Re: Thanksgiving

Okay, Cindy, here's my mom's turkey soup recipe. (She said she doesn't have one, but here's what she does, it's simple and yummy.)

Simmer carcass/bones in a lot of water for several hours.

Re: Thanksgiving

I don't know that it's written down (and it's likely not overly complicated) but I'll ask her! I do know that it tastes wonderful. :)

Re: Thanksgiving

Later today we'll be making my mother's cranberry recipe. :) If anyone's looking for one, here it is. Even the relatives who don't normally like cranberries seem to like it.

Cranberry...

Re: Thanksgiving

I haven't tried that but I bet you're right!

I'm looking for other recipes for Thanksgiving now (sides) and suggested creamed pearl onions to my husband. He looked at me like I had 3 heads. ...

We have a full house for Thanksgiving - I hope we have some leftovers! Turkey and cranberry sandwiches are delish. :)

Re: Thanksgiving

No worries Englishtart, for you it must be turkey on Christmas! It's the same sort of thing.

I would happily eat turkey for both, my mother's homemade turkey soup (for the days after Christmas)...

Here you go:

Re: Thanksgiving

Fair enough. Keep it in mind for the future though, I think the feast trumps the specific ingredients.

(Except for turkey, there must be turkey.) :)

Re: Thanksgiving

You should prepare some roasted veggies then, nothing wrong with that.

But someone said ham for Thanksgiving ... that's just wrong. ;)

You know, my mother suggested a recipe of hers that's brussel sprouts, peas and pearl onions. I'm just not sure it would have universal appeal. ;) I was thinking a variation on a Waldorf salad or...

Re: Thanksgiving

In our family we host once every three years, this year it's our turn. If you're not hosting you bring something, so desserts and appetizers (lord knows why they are necessary) will be provided by...
